Lake Baikal is arift lakein the south of the Russian region ofSiberia,
between theIrkutsk Oblastto the northwest and theBuryat Republicto the
southeast.
Lake Baikal is thefreshwaterlake with greatest volume in the world,
containing roughly 20% of the world's unfrozen surface fresh water,[4][5]and at
1,642m (5,387ft),[1]the deepest.[6]It is also among theclearest[7]of all lakes,
and thought to be the world's oldest lake[8]at 25 million years.[9]It is the
seventh-largest lake in the world by surface area.
LikeLake Tanganyika, Lake Baikal was formed as an ancientrift valley, having
the typical long crescent shape with a surface area of
31,722km2(12,248sqmi). Baikal is home to more than 1,700 species of
plants and animals, two-thirds of which can be found nowhere else in the
world[10]and was declared aUNESCOWorld Heritage Sitein 1996.[11]It is also
home toBuryattribes who reside on the eastern side of Lake Baikal,[12][13]
rearing goats, camels, cattle, and sheep,[13]where the regional mean average
temperatures vary from a minimum of 19C (2F) in winter to maximum of
14C (57F) in summer.[14]However, as these are mean temperatures, winter
nights can be considerably colder and summer days can be considerably
hotter.
