Network Topology

Describe how data is transferred between

the nodes

can be physical or logical

Types of network topology

Star

Bus

Ring

Hierarchical

Hybrid

Star Topology

All components are connected to the central device

(hub)

Indirectly connected to other node by the help of hub

All data passes through the central device before reaching

the intended destination

if one link fails, only that links is affected. All other

links remain active

Easy to fault identification & to remove parts.

Too much dependency on central device. If it fails,

whole network goes down.

Star Topology

Bus topology

Use a common backbone* to connect all device

Only the intended recipient can accepts & process the

message

only one device to transmit at a time

Ease of installation

Less cabling

Difficult to add new devices.

If any fault in backbone can stops all transmission.

*Function as a shared communication medium

Bus topology

Ring topology

every device has exactly two neighbors for

communication purposes

All messages travel through a ring in the same direction

(either "clockwise" or "counterclockwise")

A failure in any cable or device breaks the loop and can

take down the entire network

Easy to install

Easy to reconfigure

Fault identification is easy

Break in a single ring can break entire network

Ring topology

Hierarchical Topology

also called as the tree topology

has a root node and all other nodes are connected to it

forming a hierarchy

combines the characteristics of linear bus and star

topology

Signal from transmitting device first reaches the hub to which

it is connected, then directs this signal to tree bus which then
travels along the entire network

Easy to detect a faulty device

Easy to expand a network

Fault in the backbone affects the entire network

Monitoring would get complicated when there are too

many devices

Hierarchical Topology

Hybrid topology

common combination of topologies is Star-Bus or StarRing (tree topology: a collection of star networks
arranged in a hierarchy)

This network is a combination of two or more topologies

(does not have a standard form)

Useful for implementing larger networks

Handles larger volume of traffic

Easy to detect and remove faulty devices

Complex structure

Installation and reconfiguration is difficult
