Equations

L.O.:
To
be
able
to
understand and use inverse
operations, rearrange and
solve equations.

Why learn this?

You can use an equation to work out the density
of an object when you know its mass and
volume.

Equations
Here are some examples of equations.
3x + 5 = 20
5(3y + 4) = 12y 6

2(a + 3) = 8
x-2

=1-x

1) An equation must always have an = sign because

one side of the equation is always equal to the other
side.

3x + 5 = 20
left-hand side

rigt-hand side

2) The expression before the equals sign is called the

left-hand side (LHS) of the equation
3) The expression after the equals sign is called the
right-hand side (RHS) of the equation

4) The equation 3x + 5 = 20 can also be

written as 20 = 3x + 5

5) The solution of an equation is the value of the

letter (the unknown) that makes the equation true.
The solution of 3x + 5 = 20 is x = 5 because when
you replace x by 5 you get a true statement:
3 x 5 + 5 = 15 + 5 = 20

Setting Up Equations
Equations can be used to solve problems.

Example 1
Kevin thinks of a number.
Let n be the number that Kevin thinks of
He doubles the number then adds 7.
Double the number n giving 2n, and add 7: 2n

+7

His answer is 19.

Set up the equation by writing 2n + 7 = 19
Work out the number that Kevin tinks of.
Solve the equation by subtracting 7 from both sides
and dividing both sides by 2: n = 6

1. Tom thought of a number.

He then multiplied his number by 3.

He added 4 to the answer.

3x

3x + 4

He then doubled the answer to get a final

value of 38. 2(3x + 4) = 38
What number did he start with?
2(3x + 4) = 38
3x + 4 = 19
3x = 15
x=5

triangle.
Add the three angles and collect like terms:
