INTRODUCTION

Li-Fi is transmission of digital data through light by rapidly varying

the intensity of light

LEDs are used for transmission.

Intensity of LEDs can be easily modulated using basic semiconductor

electronics.

Term Li-Fi was coined by German Physicist Harald Hass.

Why Li-Fi?
CAPACITY
New technologies are going
wireless.
Wireless
bands
are
therefore
unable
to
accommodate
newer
technologies within its limit

AVAILABLITY
Bandwidth
of
present
wireless technology like the
R.F. is very less.

EFFICIENCY
Transmission
towers
for
mobile
and
radio
communication
consume
large amount of energy.
This makes it inefficient.

SECURITY
Wireless protocols arent
safe.
Multiple layers of security is
implemented to prevent
intrusion.

Principle of Li-Fi Technology

Heart of Li-Fi technology is LEDs.

LEDs are controlled by processing unit which is used for data

modulation.

On and off state of LEDs helps in transmission of data using binary

codes.

Arrays of LED can be used for transmission of large amount of data in

parallel.

Principle of Li-Fi Technology

Visible Light Technology

Li-Fi is faster and cheaper version of Wi-Fi, which is based on

visible light communication.

The visible light communication is a data communication

technique using visible light between 400THz and 800THz using
optical fibers.

ELECTROMAGNETIC SPECTRUM
Gama rays cant be used as they could be dangerous.
X-rays have similar health issues.
Ultraviolet light is good for place without people, but other wise dangerous for the
human body.
Infrared, due to eye safety regulation, can only be used with low power.

HENCE VISIBLE LIGHT

Visible Light Technology

DEVICES USED IN VISIBLE LIGHT
COMMUNICATION

Devices which are used for transmission of visible light are visible
light LED and fluorescent lamps.

Li-Fi uses fluorescent lamps to transmit signals at 10bit/s, or LEDs

for up to 500 Mbit/s.

Devices which are used for reception purpose in visible light

communication are photo-electronic devices and image sensors.

WORKING OF Li-Fi
TECHNOLOGY

WORKING OF Li-Fi
TECHNOLOGY
Li-Fi is implemented using white LED light bulbs at downlink
transmitter.

By fast variations of the current, optical output can be made to

vary at extremely high speeds.

An overhead lamp fitted with an LED with signal processing

technology streams data embedded in its beam to the
photodiodes.

A receiver dongle then converts the tiny changes in amplitude

COMPARISON BETWEEN Wi-Fi AND LiFi

Li-Fi

Fast transfer speed >1Gbps

Wi-Fi

Data transfer speed 300Mbps

Uses radio spectrum

Comparatively small radio

spectrum

Expensive as it uses radio

spectrum.

Operates at 2.4GHz.

Uses light as carrier

Visible light spectrum has
10,000 time broad spectrum
compared to radio frequency.

Cheaper because of free band.

Operates in range of terahertz.

APPLICATIONS

Li-Fi can be used in sensitive areas such as

aircraft for data transmission without causing
interference.

APPLICATIONS

Can be used in places where it is difficult to

lay optical fibers like operation theaters .

APPLICATIONS

Li-Fi can be used in underwater oil rigs where

radio waves cant propagate.

APPLICATIONS

Street lamps can be transformed into

Li-Fi access points to transfer data.

APPLICATIONS

Li-Fi can be used in petrochemical industries

where other transmission frequencies can be
hazardous

APPLICATIONS

Li-Fi can be used in traffic junctions for road

safety. Headlights and backlight of the
vehicles can pass on information about
dangers ahead.
