AUGMENTED REALITY

WHAT IS AUGMENTED REALITY?

Type of virtual reality.

system generates a composite view.
combination of the real scene and virtual

COMBINING REAL AND VIRTUAL WORLDS:

We need:
Precise models
Locations and optical properties of the viewer (or
camera) and the display
Calibration of all devices
To combine all local coordinate systems centered
on the devices and the objects in the scene in a
global coordinate system
Register models of all 3D objects of interest with
their counterparts in the scene
Track the objects over time when the user moves
and interacts with the scene

HOW IT WORKS?

The webcam connected to computer video in the traditional manner.

user holds the marker in front of the webcam it sees the marker, captures the
information/pattern encoded in it and sends this information to the computer.
The computer recognises the information and overlays the marker with an
image. To the viewer it appears as though the image has materialised by magic.
The computer can track the size and movement of the image. This means if user
moves the marker closer to the webcam the image will get bigger. If user tilts
the marker to the left, the image will tilt to the left.

AUGMENTED REALITY V/S VIRTUAL REALITY:

Augmented Reality
System augments the
real world scene
User maintains a sense
of presence in real world
Needs a mechanism to
combine virtual and real
worlds
Hard to register real and
virtual

Virtual Reality
Totally immersive
environment
Senses are under
control of system
Need a mechanism to
feed virtual world to
user
Hard to make VR world
interesting

MODIFACE:
Virtual makeover technology.

TRY LIVE:
Allows users to try on
glasses, jewelry, shoes,
clothes

The Artvertiser

Software platform that replaces advertisements with art in real time.

Google Glass

Pair of glasses that allows

the user to take pictures,
videos, use GPS, send
messages and much more
hands free!
The user is able to see real
world surroundings and use
the glasses to do multiple
activities during daily life.

AUTODESK SHOWCASE
This software can be used by architects, engineers, designers,
and marketing professionals.
3D CAD models can be quickly transformed into interactive
walk-throughs and presentations.

NAVIGATION:

Most natural fit of augmented reality with our everyday lives

Enhanced GPS systems are used in augmented reality to make it easier to move from
one point to the other

SIGHTSEEING:

Sightseeing has been enhanced

using augmented reality.
A smartphone equipped with a
camera is used so that tourists can
walk through historic sites and see
facts and figures presented as an
overlay on their live screen.

MILITARY:
The Heads-Up Display (HUD)
is an example of augmented
reality
in
the
military
applications of the technology.
A transparent display is
positioned directly in the
fighter pilots view.
Data is displayed to the pilot
includes altitude, airspeed and
the horizon line in addition to
other critical data.

MEDICAL:

Medical students use the technology to practice surgery in a

controlled environment.

Visualizations aid in explaining complex medical conditions to

patients.

Augmented reality reduces the risk of an operation by giving the

surgeon improved sensory perception.

MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR:

A head worn display, a mechanic making repairs to engine

can see superimposed imagery and information in their actual
line of sight.

This procedure might be presented in a box in the corner and

an image of the tool can be illustrated with the exact motion
the mechanic needs to perform.

The augmented reality system can label all the important

parts.

Complex procedural repairs can be broken down into a series

of simple steps.

GAMING:

With recent advances in computing power and technology, gaming applications

in augmented reality are on the upswing.

Head worn systems are inexpensive and computing power is more portable than
ever.

ENTERTAINMENT:

Augmented
reality
has
become
a
hugely
important
driving
force
for
entertainment
industry because it is more interactive and attract
more audients
It permits 3-D virtual imagery to be overlaid on
the real world

ADVERTISING AND PROMOTION:

The James Cameron movie, Avatar, blurred the lines between reality and animation.

The promotion and advertising campaign pushed augmented reality like never before. Avatar toys manufactured by Mattel include a card
that can be read by a webcam. The result is an augmented reality robot or character that comes to life on your computer screen. The
technology which was developed by Total Immersion also includes interactivity by adding a button to the cards. Pressing the buttons causes
the on-screen character to shoot a gun or even recite part of the script.

SOFTWARES:

Argon, augmented reality browser by Georgia Tech's GVU Center that uses a mix of KML and HTML/JavaScript/CSS to allow developing AR applications.

AR Toolkit, an open source C-library to create augmented reality applications.

ArUco, a minimal library for augmented reality applications based on OpenCV

JavaCV, A Java/Android interface to OpenCV

ATOMIC Authoring Tool, a multi-platform authoring for creating AR applications on Microsoft Windows, Linux and Mac OS X operating systems.

Goblin XNA, a platform for researching 3D user interfaces, including mobile augmented reality and virtual reality

FUTURE TRENDS:
1. Affordable VR headsets will normalize
Virtual Reality Its not just for gamers
anymore
2. Evolved AR & VR business and marketing
solutions
3. Retailers get serious with AR and VR as
consumers start to expect it
4.Virtual test drives and virtual vacations
5. Phones built for AR & VR
