Background
The Konkan Railway is a railway line which runs along the Konkan coast of India between Mumbai and
Mangalore. It was constructed and is operated by the Konkan Railway Corporation. It runs from Roha
in Maharashtra till Thokur in Karnataka for a total distance of 741 km (460 mi), along the west coast
of India and Western Ghats.
Why KR?
1. Bombay to Mangalore hauling time
was 41hrs , After Konkan railway The completion of the project will
benefit the public immensely,
reducing journey time from
bombay to Cochin by over12
hours and to Mangalore by over 26
hours
2.Besides driving to tourism, this
railway line will contribute to a savings
of at least Rs.200 crore a year in
foreign exchange by reducing fuel
requirements in road transport

The Project-Overview
Estimated Project cost -860 crore then to 2780 crore but by completion 3375 crore
The funding was a combination of equity, debt and lease financing. Konkan Railway was constructed on a build,
operate, transfer (BOT) basis.
Approval from Planning Commission, central government and the beneficiary state Government (Maharashtra, Goa,
Karnataka, and Kerala).
They planned that the whole railway line would be divided into 7 zones, each zone concurrent with a revenue
district, and a Chief Engineer was posted for each zone.
The project was estimated to complete in 5 years time, ultimately took 7 years for completion.
land acquisition of 40000 landowners had to be negotiated with compensation and rent for 1.5 half years.
Contracts for the project were few of the biggest and most reputed construction firms, including Larsen and Toubro,
Gammon India and AFCONS
Project Implementation
Networking Through hired DOT lines, Computer and fax machines provided to Chief engineers to resolve
communication problem.
Delegation of power to the Chief Engineer so day to day work runs smooth.
Turnout with thick web switch were train could speed up to 50 km/hr were as in previously it was 15km/hr.
Gas Pressure welding was adopted on site as pre-welded long rails cannot be transported to site, Novel type of
ventilation system adapted for long tunnels.
Incremental launch method of building a complete bridge deck from one end to other end.
Optic fibre for telecommunication, Fuel stores were set on site as reach for fuel for equipments was difficult.
Contractors had to prepare the bills of which 75percent will be payed within 48hrs and rest within a week after
verification.
The cash operating and maintenance expenses were in excess of Rs one crore per day. Given that KRC was
expecting of daily earnings of Rs 25 lakhs by way of passenger traffic. they needed about 10 loaded freight trains to
ply over the entire KRC segment daily (at an average contribution of Rs 7.5 lakhs/train in 1998) to break-even.
At the end of 9 months of operation, only 94 rakes had moved over the KRC segment, KRC was thus in a
financially unhealthy situation.
Assumption- Traffic earning would start on day one, at full utilization. There was enough traffic potential of trucks
on NH 17 running parallel to KR. The new flats will have 100 km/h speed, with a length of 40 feet to accommodate
two trucks. (The flats would be fit to take container traffic also).
On a capital of Rs 1,700 lakhs, the net surplus expected was Rs 2,004 lakhs per annum on implementation of roll on
roll off by capitalizing wagon flats.
CONCEPT
Project Conceptualization
RORO means Roll-on/roll-off, where loaded trucks are directly carried by railway wagons to their destination. Konkan
Railways passes through tough terrains of India. There is NH-17 passing through same route.
From competition to cooperation-Road and railway logistics competition to integration to reduce cost involved. .
Terminal loading and unloading time is 15 min , Chances of truck accidents are eliminated .
Operational efficiency -RORO increases trucker earnings by improving TAT--the transit time of trucks in the Mumbai
Goa section on RORO is 30% of that on road.
1.
2.
Tariffs are reasonable as it can avoid Fuel, toll, Octroi , Wear and tear of the vehicle.
3.
Recent years
Konkan Railway has earned a record Rs 300 cr alone from
freight traffic in 2008-09
Konkan Railway, which earned Rs 725 crore in 2008-09,
has also registered a growth of 8% as compared to the
previous year, marginal increase in number of freight trains
also.
Konkan Railway is unable to meet the demand, and plans
to double tracks soon
Thank you
