GREEN COMPOSITES

Generally natural fiber composites are termed

as green composites.
These fibers are biodegradable and recyclable.
These are becoming popular because of the
advantages over traditional fibers in terms of
low cost, low density, biodegradability and
easy processing.

APPLICATIONS IN AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY

Composites made of renewable materials

have been rampantly used in interior and
exterior body parts.
In recent years there has been increasing
interest in the replacement of fiberglass in
reinforced plastic composites by natural
plant fibers such as jute and ramie.

BASIC TERMINOLOGY
Micro-mechanics:
Study of composite materials by
understanding interaction between
constituent materials on a microscopic scale.
Such an approach helps one theoretically
compute material properties, and failure
mechanisms of composites.
Such an approach is difficult to use for large
structures because of computational
limitations.

Macromechanics:
Study of composite materials
presumed to be homogeneous.
In such an approach of study,
averaged properties of
composite material are used to
account for the effects of
constituent materials.
1. Such an approach works
well for large structures.
2. Prediction of stresses at
microlevel is not accurate
