1. Introducing a topic relevant to
ones field of study


Despite political differences, China and Taiwan share many
common economic interests, as evidenced by their
increasingly strong economic ties in the Asia-Pacific region.
I am interested in understanding how the civil engineering
profession can contribute further to strengthening these ties.

The explosive pace at which innovative civil engineering-
based practices appear on the worksite never ceases to
amaze me, and I am eager to remain abreast of the latest
developments in the field.

Given the islands recent accession to the World Trade
Organization and the eradication of many trade barriers
to the local market economy, local civil engineers must
continually upgrade their professional skills and linguistic
abilities to remain competitive in the global workplace.

Taiwan severely lacks technology professionals with a
background in civil engineering and business
administration, preventing the islands economy from
keeping up with recently emerging trends in global R&D.

Following its rapid industrial development in recent
decades, Taiwan is now striving to become the Green
Silicon Island by simultaneously pursuing
environmentalism and developing high-tech industries,
areas that the civil engineering sector is committed.

2.Describing the importance of the
topic within ones field of study


Integrating information technology and civil engineering
into the burgeoning construction engineering sector in
Taiwan has tremendous commercial and societal
implications for the islands economy.

Adopting knowledge management practices in
construction engineering attests to the potential for
integrating seemingly polar disciplines to create new
technical and market opportunities.

Taiwans pivotal role in contributing to the infrastructure
development of Greater China necessitates that local
civil engineering professionals and investors remain
attuned to the latest technological and developmental
trends on both sides of the Taiwan Strait.
