ituation & Brief

Design Situation
With the amount of accidents that happen on the roads in Britain each year, it is important to always
be ready for the unexpected as there are thousands of accidents, fatal and non-fatal each year.
Although car travel safety kits have already on the market, they often cause storage issues and can
make it harder for the public when it comes to simple tasks like shopping etc. or going on holiday as
they can often take up a lot of space in the boot of the car. In 2012, there was reports of over 1700
deaths due to road accidents.
Design Brief
I have been asked by a client to create a car emergency travel kit that can be placed in the back of
the car that takes up little space for the user and will not create a storage issue. I have also been
asked to create this kit with all of the essential items that you will need in any type of life emergency
whether it be a car breakdown, some being injured or a fire etc. I will then sell this product to the
client to be sold onto the public. My client for my project will be the RAC.
Initial Specification Points

The product needs to take up little space in the motor vehicle and not create a storage problem.

The product must have/be able to hold all of the essential equipment that would be required in
any type of emergency.

The product must come at an affordable price so a lot of the public can afford it.

The product must be user friendly and safe to use as a lot of the equipment could be seen as
dangerous.

The product must come as one item such as bag or box to save space and so that everything is
kept together and secure in one location.

The product must be portable and easy to carry for the user.

This slide is my
situation and brief.

lient Interview/Research

I have gathered information on my client from the companys website.

Ever since its foundation in 1897, the RAC has been consistently at the forefront in developing motoring services - from introducing
uniformed patrols in 1901 and roadside emergency telephone boxes in 1912 right through to the present day when we boast the world's
most advanced computer systems to deal with calls for roadside assistance.
RAC Members enjoy access to an enormous range of motoring products and services throughout their driving lives, ranging from the
familiar and much appreciated roadside assistance in the event of a breakdown to continually updated legal and technical advice and upto-the-minute travel information.
The RAC is headquartered in Birmingham with approximately 4,000 dedicated staff operating from four bases throughout the UK and
provides motor-related services to both consumers and corporate clients. The RAC offers vehicle and breakdown services through a
nationwide, branded patrol force, focusing primarily on vehicle repair and recovery. In 2012, the RAC's patrol force of approximately 1,700

at all times without it creating a separate storage issue. So my question is, do you have any products of this type that you sell to the public?
Answer: At the moment, we sell individual products such as car first aid kits or jump leads but we do not sell an all in one kit.
Question: What do you think of the idea of one of these products of selling one of these types of products through your company?
Answer: I think a kit of this type would be very beneficial to our company and to the public. I understand the amount of accidents that happen on the road
and how important it is to expect the unexpected, unlike our individual products a full kit would be very good.
Question: A lot of people keep emergency items in the back of their car and it often causes a storage issue for the user. What do you think of a kit that easily
fits an automobile that doesnt create another storage issue for the user.
Answer: I think this makes the product a very good idea. Personally, I keep items in the car such as a first aid kit and jump leads in case of an emergency. I
have also noticed that it does create a storage issue even if I am only going shopping and I then have to find another home for them in my car. So I think
making a kit which is easy to put away and keep stored is an excellent idea.
Question: I am thinking of the product having all of the items that you would need for any type of emergency but I still want it to be lightweight and easy to
put away for the user. What type of emergency items would you consider me including in the kit.
Answer: I think it is important to include all of the essential equipment such as a first aid kit for example. Anything else might not be needed such as a pump
for example. So I think all of the equipment that is important to include is a first aid kit, torch, jump leads, high visibility jacket etc.
Question: Would you be interested in selling my product and if so, what price range would you be looking at?
Answer: I definitely would be looking to sell a product of this type as I have said it would be very beneficial to the public. The price range I would be looking
at would range depending on the products inside, meaning youll have to go away and research and we can have another meeting later in the design
process.

This slide contains my

client interview. I have met
up with a senior member of
RAC to ask them some
initial questions about my
product and whether they
would be interested in
selling it on through their
company. This will benefit
me as it gives me a basic
insight into what my client
wants from the product and
how they want it. I will take
some of these questions
and answers into account
later on in the design
process

This is the time plan, on this I have wrote down

everything I need to do in the design process with the
dates to complete this and then added the dates of
which I will complete the tasks. I will refer back to this
during the product to see what to do next and to see
where I am at in the project. I will use as a guide for my
entire project throughout the year.

ood Board/Client Profile

Client Profile
Age: The target audience for my product will be
between age of thirty and fifty.
Gender: There is no target gender that this
particular product will be aimed at. This is
because almost all men and women drive and
can be a use to both.
Family: Husband and children. This is because
more of these types of products are sold to this
market.
Jobs: A far away job that requires a lot of
travelling using a car.
Income: 28,00 minimum per annum.
Car: Hyundai i10
Hobbies: Shopping, going out with family and
friends, travelling and going on holidays.
Home: A three bedroom private terraced house
Shops at: IKEA, Debenhams, RAC/Halfords,
Wilkinsons
Lifestyle: Decent income, likes to have modern
and innovative house with new and exciting
items. Interested with eating healthily and having
a good wellbeing.
Interior Style: Post modernist, a mix of modern
and traditional looking furniture.
This is my client profile and mood board. The importance of
this page is that it gives me a basic idea and insight into the
type of consumer that will be purchasing my product. A client
is different from a consumer as the client is the person I will be
talking to about my product whereas the consumer is the
person who buys the product. I will then use this to go further
into detail about what the user wants from my product.

This slide is my task analysis. I have created a diagram

listing what I am going to do throughout my project.
These include the choices I have made, such as the
scale of production and how and what I need to
research. I will use this as a guide to find out the
answers to each of the questions whether it be during
my research or design ideas. I will also refer back to this
during my research plan as I have created lots of points
that I will need to research to create the specification
for my product.

Jonathan Davies A2 Product

What Do I Need to Research?

How/Where Will I Find This?

How Will This Help Me?

Target Audience

I will find out the information for this by

giving out a questionnaire. When making
my questionnaire, I will make sure that I
ask the different types of questions such as
open, closed and forced questions to make
it a more varied questionnaire. I will also
speak to my client later on during the
project about the target market and what
they would want from the product.

Learning and finding information about my

target market will help me during the
product as it gives me more specification
points as they will want certain things
about the product. This means that during
the project I will be looking back at my
target market research and designing the
product how the target market want the
product to be.

Existing Products

I will find information on existing products

by looking at different sources, the main
source for information I will use will be the
internet. I will look at different websites
and companies online and then analyse the
products on many different basis such as
cost, function, aesthetics etc. I will also
look in store for products of this type and
analyse them the same.

This will help me during my project

because when I analyse the products, it
gives me the chance to view the strengths
and weaknesses of each product and
therefore tells me about things I should
possibly avoid doing when it comes to my
design ideas and development. It could
also tell me ideas that I could use when it
comes to design ideas of my product.

Materials

I will find out information on materials from

a variety of sources again. I will use my
schools library and use books to find out
information on different materials. I will
also use the internet and different
websites.

This will help me during my project as it will

give me an insight into the materials that I
will be able to use and it will also tell me
about the pros and cons of each material
showing me which is better for the
purpose.

Dimensions

I will find information on dimensions by

looking in store or online at the sizes of the
equipment that I need. This makes looking
in store easier than online.

This will help me as when I am designing, it

will be important to know the sizes of the
equipment so I know the sizes of the
compartments I will need.

esearch Plan

Equipment Needed

This can link into my existing products as I

will be looking at the products that I will
need to include into my safety emergency
This is my research plan for my product. I have

stage. I will refer to this each time I have completed a
section of research so that I know what to research
next. I have also included where will I find the
information and how it will help so I know exactly where
to find the information and why I am researching it in
the first place.

This will help me a lot as it will tell me what

I need to include and will thereafter help
me during the design ideas and
development stage. This is because I need
to know how to design it and what to
include into it.

AA Euro Travel Kit

The RRP price for this product is 39.99. The description for is as follows If you're planning a driving trip in Europe you
need to be prepared. The AA have gathered many of the European motoring must have's into one convenient pack: AA
Euro Travel Kit. The main purpose of this kit is to aim at people that are planning on travelling around Europe unlike my
design problem in the UK. This kit contains; a pair of beam converters, universal bulb kit, first aid kit, warning triangle,
adults high visibility jacket, magnetic GB plate, AA European drivers and handbook. Ive noticed that this product is more
for the European traveller rather than having emergency items in case of an accident. Although there are some items
that I would include such as the high visibility jacket, first aid kit and the warning triangle. I like that all of the products
are together in one bag, this will save on storage space, I also like that the bag has a handle so that it is easy to move
around for the user. A handle or strap is something I would consider including into my product to make it more
ergonomically friendly for the user to handle.
RAC Car Breakdown Kit
The retail price for this product is 69.99. this product is a lot more expensive although it has other items that the first
product does not. The description is as follows Its no fun breaking down in your car, especially on a dark night. When it
happens its important that you are prepared to be as safe as possible while you wait for your roadside rescue service; or
have some basic tools to carry out minor repairs or removal. Our new range of Car Breakdown Kits have been designed
for different levels of need - from basic roadside safety, to our ultimate kit which contains all the essentials for handling a
breakdown or emergency. Some of the equipment that is included is; a warning triangle, a foil blanket, high visibility
vest, RAC pebble wind-up torch, tow rope, spare bulb kit, wheel wrench, double cylinder foot pump, jump leads, fire
extinguisher, first aid kit and a heavy duty car boot organiser. I think one of the drawbacks of this product is that they
dont fit all into one product such as a bag or a box for example. This is one thing I will be including into my design ideas
and development By all of the items not being in one bag or box for example, it makes a huge storage issue for the user.
AA car essentials emergency winter car kit
The retail price for this product is 34.99. The description is as follows The AA Emergency Winter Car Kit is essential if
you want to be prepared for this winter. Comes in a handy storage bag to stow easily in the boot of your car. The folding
shovel is compact but strong enough to tackle thick snow with a pair of snow and ice grips, to ensure you remain safe in
wintery conditions. A Hi-Vis jacket ensures other motorists can see you and a handy torch to help you see and be seen on
those cold dark nights. The foil blanket will help keep you warm should you need to wait for rescue. This kit also includes
a rain ponchos plus a set of fully insulated booster cables in case of emergencies. The difference between this product is
that it is made primarily for the winter. This means that only certain products will be included. An example of this could
be the folding shovel which you wouldnt need in any normal type of emergency. I could take this idea into account and
add items that could be used for emergencies in different seasons. I like that this is another kit where it is all kept in one
bag/box. This then doesnt create another storage issue. This is my opinion is a very good product.
The Nike Golf Performance Hybrid Stand Bag has a 9" 14-way top and the outstanding feature of this bag which has
plenty of room for both golf clubs and accessories is that you can use the quick release straps to carry the bag yourself
or detach them and place the bag on a trolley at your convenience. I have chosen to look at a golf carry, this is because I
need to look at other products with the same sort of purpose. This product is made from a strong fabric. This is because it
needs to a hold a lot of heavy things without risk of it breaking. When I am in my design process and development, I will
look back
at products
like this and decide on whether I want to include any of the strengths or weaknesses into my own

try to avoid when it comes to designing my

This is the winner I have chosen for the CAFEQUE. I have chosen this for several different reasons. These
include that it is the cheapest of all of the products and also one of the most effective, best looking and user
friendly products. Unlike two of the other products, this is very user friendly. For example, it has a handle so
that the user can hold it easily and safely. It is also very suitable for the environment as a car as it is square so
that it will not fall over and also meets the theme of a car boot as most car boots are black allowing the yellow
to be seen much easier if needed in an emergency. This also has different equipment in that isnt in normal kits
making it more effective. This is because it is specifically tailored for winter which I think it is positive because
it does not have only the essential safety items but items specifically suited to problems that occur during the
winter. As the product is made from AA, the product is also very good quality. This include the actual bag with
everything in and also the actual components. Overall, this is the product I have chosen as my favourite
CAFEQUE.

This slide is my CAFEQUE and winner summary. I have

looked at all of the products that I have researched and
rated them from 0-10 on the categories; cost,
aesthetics, function, ergonomics, quality, user and
environment. I then added these up and gave them a
total. The winner I then explained why I think his is the
best overall product and for what reasons. I will look
back at this when I am in the design ideas so that I can
see what makes the product good.

Wood is split up into two main different groups. These groups are hardwoods and softwoods. Hardwoods come from deciduous trees
and grow over a very long time. Hardwoods are often used for furniture as they are much stronger than softwoods so they can be
used for items such as indoor tables, chairs and flooring etc. This is because it has a very good strength to weight ratio so it can hold
a lot compared to its weight.it also has a naturally aesthetically pleasing grain to the material. This makes it ideal in the home. Some
hardwoods include; Oak, Beech, Teak, Walnut, Ash and Yew. The other type of wood is softwoods. Softwoods grow much quicker and
the trees that they grow on are known as evergreen trees. Softwoods can be used for furniture as well but usually are made into
manufactured boards rather than pure softwoods. Some softwoods can include; Scott's pine, spruce, Douglas fir etc. There are also
different manufactured boards, some of these include; plywood, medium density fibreboard, block board or chipboard. Although,
there are many other different types of manufactured boards. These often have many different purposes, although they are mainly
used in inside furniture as they can be crafted much cheaper than the use of hardwoods and softwoods as they are used from
softwoods and sometimes, the bits leftover from the making of and crafting of other products. Woods are often much stronger than

require high skilled workers as they cannot be machine worked. Paper can be split up into many
different sections such as card, paper and board. These products and material types can range from
carton board which is used in food products to cardboard which is mostly used for packaging and we
come to know almost every day. Paper and board can often be cheap however due to the strength of
the material, it is usually only used for products such as models and prototypes and sometimes
testing.
On this slide, I have talked about many different
materials and how they could possibly help me in the
creation of my product. I will also use and refer to this
page when creating my specification and other pages
such as my component material page. This is very
important as I ca use this for my source of information
rather than using the internet or book for example. I
have included some detail but I have also put all of the
basic information in that I would need to know during
the rest of my project.

Throughout my research, I looked back at my research plan

(as shown to the right) to check if I have met all of the
points I wanted to. I also used this as a checklist while I was
researching which was beneficial to me to keep track of my
project.
To research my target audience, I created a
questionnaire which I sent out to a large group of
people. When completing my questionnaire, I made sure
to ask a wide range of age groups and genders to make
sure that the questionnaire was fair and not bias. I also
made sure to ask different types of question with open
responses, closed and forced questions. I asked
questions, that I think will benefit me when designing
my project and give me a better insight into my target
market. I will then use the information I have gathered
for the rest of my project whether it is during the
manufacturing of my product or the designing.
I have then started to research into existing products. To
do this, I attributes.

my school library. I used a textbook to gather basic but important
information. This will help me as I will use this slide for information on materials when I am further into the design process. I will
look back at the specific slide and pick out pros and cons about the specific materials.
To research my dimensions, I used the internet as well as in store products. For the warning triangle of my product I had to find
out how big it will be or how big the dimensions will be if the product was to fold down into a smaller product. This is very
important to me as I will need to find out any of this information before the creation or the design of my product. By recording
this research within my project, it will then allow me to come back and refer to the dimensions.
To look at the equipment I would need, I looked at existing kits and based a base list of equipment I could include into my
project. This information, I will then put into my specification and use to base off for my design ideas and further into my design
process.
The strengths of my research include that I have gathered all of the information originally stated in my research plan. This is
important as that means I have now found and gathered all of the information I need to further into the design process. As this is

individual point on the research plan and what I have
done to research them and how I have gathered the
information. I have then given an explanation for how I
will use this information throughout the rest of my
project. After completing each of these points, I created a

Specification Point
Function
The product must contain all equipment
needed to suit the needs of any
emergency that the use will encounter on
the road. The equipment that the kit will
contain includes; a fire extinguisher, first
aid kit, warning triangle, high visibility
jacket and finally jump leads.
The kit must be easily accessible during an
emergency. For example, if there is a car
crash the kit must be easily accessible for
the user to grab, therefore meaning the kit
must be lightweight and not take up too
much room in the car.
The kit must be sturdy and therefore not
roll in the back of the car with other items
such as shopping etc. It must also be
sturdy to not damage the actual boot.
Ergonomics
The kit must have a handle/strap to be
able for the user to lift it or transport it
with ease. This is because it will be much
more use friendly if the user can remove
the entire kit using a handle.
The product must be safe for the user to
handle. This means that there must be not
sharp edges to the outside of the product
or any parts to the product which could
harm the user without intending to.
The product must be easy to remove the
products from. This means that the items
must be easy to take out. For example, the
compartments must be easy to take apart
in the case of an emergency.

Why is it important?

How will I test it?

This is important as anybody can encounter any

type of emergency on the road and they will
need all of the equipment ready for any
situation. It is important to have all of the items
included as they are all needed for different
situations. An example could be a fire
extinguisher if there is a fire.
This a very important point as if somebody is
injured for example, they must be easily be able
to go and pick up the kit to grab the first aid kit
from it if they are injured. Another example
could be if there was a fire and the user had to
grab the fire extinguisher quickly.
This is very important because the point of this
kit is to be there for an emergency but to also
not create another storage issue as if the items
were not secured together. It is also important to
not damage the boot or anything in it.

This is important as if the user is packing their

car for example, they will need all of the space
they can get so they might have to move the kit
to another part of the car such as the backseats
meaning it must be easy to move.
This is very important as the user should not
have to worry about harming themselves on the
product. It is also crucial for the company as any
complaints will effect the company reputation.
This is very important as the product might be
required in the case of an emergency. An
example of this could be that there is a fire or an
injury and the equipment is needed fast meaning
that the equipment will need to be removed fast.

Cost
The kit must come at an affordable price

that I will refer to these points when I am in the design
and manufacturing process of my project. I have created
these specification points from the research I have

I will create a complete set list of items I

need to include so that I can use it almost as
a checklist to what I will have in my kit. I will
then use this list to check off the items that I
need and I will check them off when I have
got them throughout my project to help me
keep track of what I already have.
I will test this by numerous tests such as
checking how heavy it is, how quick it is to
access the items and how easy it is to
access from the back seats of the car as well
as the boot. I will also use methods to make
the product easily accessible.
I will test this by placing my prototype in a
car and test how the kit will stand in the
back of the car and whether it will fall and/or
roll about while the car is moving.

I will test this by creating a handle or strap

or some sort of handle which can be used to
be easily moved by the user. It will be
important to test if the product is safe to use
by the user
I will test this by making sure that all of the
visible edges are smooth. I will also use the
product as if it was my own and check for
any hazards that I should know about.
I will test this by creating a way or method
of removing this equipment in a quick and
fast manor to remove it in the case of an
emergency. I will use different techniques
for the specific and different equipment.

I will test this by checking an appropriate

price by taking into account the scale of
production and the equipment inside of the
product.

I will test this by placing the kit into the

back of a car boot and checking for space.

Specification Point
Materials
The materials for the product must be
strong enough to hold all of the materials.
This is to make it safe for the user to keep
inside their car.
The materials that I use for the product
must be lightweight enough for the user to
lift easily in the case of an emergency. Also
it needs to be lightweight before adding
the equipment into the product.
The materials selected must be
aesthetically pleasing. Examples of this
could be a material where a finish can be
applied or dyed in manufacture.
Aesthetics
The product must be easily seen by the
user via a reflective strip or a finish that is
applied to the product so that it can seen
in the dark.
The product will need to have an
innovative and creative shape. This is
because my brief tells me so and because
my client prefers a creative design.
The product must be aesthetically
pleasing. This could be done by the
colours used in the product or the theme
which is used throughout.
Scale of Production
My product will be mass produced and
then sold through my client through the
internet and in store where applicable.

Why is it important?

How will I test it?

This is important because the product must be

placed in the back of a car without being
damaged or damaging the boot. It is also
important to not damage the equipment.
This is important as it is essential for the user to
be able to lift the whole product if they need to.
An example of this could be if the product needs
to be pushed out of the way to make way for
shopping or bags etc.
This is important as when I conducted research,
a lot of the products are very aesthetically
pleasing and often meet themes such as yellow
to show hazard.

This is very important as it will need to be seen

by the user if the weather conditions are bad
such as fog or if it dark outside and inside the
back of a car.
This is important to the design of the product as
this is what my brief has told me to create. My
research also tells me that my target market
want this from the product.
This is important as the aesthetics of a product is
the first impression a customer will make a
product. I understand the terms form and
function and agree are both as important.

This product will be sold to the public through a

large company. It is important that it is massed
produced as it will be sold on the internet and in
store so a lot will be required.

I will test this by contacting my client about

the product and in what numbers will it be
sold. We will then discuss where it is to be
sold.

I will test this by recording what the target

market want in the kit and then following
my list of equipment to include into my
product.
I will test this by making sure all sharp
edges have been taken off and that all
equipment is held in secure so that children
or animals cannot touch them.

boot of a car. I have
looked at different
shapes I can give the
product to make it more
innovative. These have
included sticking the fire

side of the holder.
However, this could be a
problem if it can only be
removed one way if
there is an obstruction

the product will be used
and what will go where.
This design will be
connected to the boot

strips so that it could be
removed and put
somewhere else for
example. I think this is a
very good product as it
can be taken off if the
boot is full or moved
anywhere the strip is. It
is also good because it
cannot fall out and
damage anything inside
the back of the car. The
design for this holder
could used for other
purposes such as
feeders for animals
being transported in the
boot of the car. However,
the drawbacks of this
product include that it
can sometimes be in the
way of shopping and

different ways of

the previous design, I
have looked at ways

This design started off as a kit that is

connected under car seats. The main
feature of this is so that it does not
cause a storage issue for the user. I
have looked into how the product will
be connected to the seat and how it
will be removed when needed in the
case of an emergency. The last thing I
have done is look at how the actual

a triangle shape alike a
warning triangle. I
thought that as warning
triangles are mostly
different shapes to first
aid kits etc. it would
make it space effective if
I used the most of my
space. I have looked at
the shape of the product
such as whether the
triangle will narrow
towards the top or be
uniform all the way
throughout. I think the
strengths of this design
is that it is very user
friendly in the way that
the user can take the
first aid kit and warning
triangle off without too
much hassle. Some of
the other strengths
include that it is an
aesthetically pleasing
product to look at.
However, there are
many weaknesses to this
product such as finding
an appropriate place to
have a handle or for the
user being able to pick
up the product. For the
product to save space it
also needs to be smaller,
however due to the
function of the product
holding the warning
triangle, it cannot be. If
the wood is too thin, it
could also lead to the
product being unstable
and toppling over
without help. This would
then lead to other
problems such as the
first aid kit falling out
and falling on fragile
items in the boot of the
car for example. On

This design is a
development of my
previous as I have used
the triangular shape
and the idea of holding
the warning triangle on
the outside of the
product. On this design
I started looking at two
triangles, one slotting
inside the other and
acting as a frame
holding all the items on
the outside. There will
then be a hole on the
outside piece allowing
the user to remove
them with ease. I then
looked at methods of
putting a handle to
remove the inner
triangle easier. This is
good as it is very user
friendly. I think that the
strengths of this
product are that it is
very user friendly as it
is designed for the user
to just remove items
from the outside and
there is a handle to hold
the entire product.
However, the
drawbacks are that the
equipment could
possibly get damaged
in the back of the car if
there are other personal
items there.. I then
moved onto the idea of
items being sandwiched
between two products.
The equipment will be
connected by clips so
they can just be
removed. I have looked
into how the clips will
be connected. I have
also come up with a
design that the warning
triangle will fit onto the

can be opened via a lock

appealing. I have looked

into the shape of a triangle.
I have also looked at

This slide shows how I have designed the sides of my product.

I have designed this side of the product to have a clip to close
the product and also a handle to make it easier to hold for the
user. The handle shows an aluminium handle attached to
wooden base which is then attached to the product. The
handle will be attached to the wood via a hole being cut
halfway through at the back and it then being screwed in. The
wooden base will be attached by a screw. It is important to
use a countersink to make the screw so that it is flat with the
wood. I have designed the clip so that a piece of wood is
attached to the bottom triangle and the clip is then in line
with the top triangle.

This side of my product just contains the fire extinguisher

holder. This will be connected by screws. The fire extinguisher
will then sit comfortably inside the holder. The circle bit comes
outwards from the product and will therefore keep the
equipment safe. On this side, I have shown a piece of wood at
the end, this will display that the wood will be stuck together
in a 60 degree angle. The wood will be stuck together via a
strong gorilla glue, I will then remove any excess.

The final side for my product shows the hinges and how they
are connected. The hinges will be connected to pieces of wood
and then attached to the top triangle. The wooden pieces will
then be screwed to the main body of the product. The top part
of the hinge will also be screwed to the top triangle.

This slide shows my design development and how I

have developed my design through different
methods. I have shown using CAD software and
also developing my designs on paper. All of which
has brought me closer to deciding on my final

Using CAD software I have drawn out an idea for what

drawing a square and then turning it into a triangle by
drawing a line from the bottom corners to the top

part of the bottom layer to look like it is 3D. On this

aluation of DesignsJonathan

This is my final design that I will be using

throughout my project. I have chosen this because
it is fee sable and it is also a very goo product. It
will be able to hold all of the equipment that the
user has asked for and it is also a very innovative
design. It meets all of the specification criteria and
does exactly what it is meant to. An example of this
is that it has a handle so it is user friendly and it is
also a weird shape so it will not topple over in the
back of a car. Overall this is the best design.

This slide is my evaluation of designs, I am looking

at which design I will use for my final product and
will provide valid reasons why I have made that
choice. I have also included measurements on this
slide which I will refer back to during the
manufacture of my product. I have included both
CAD and pencil designs to give me a better reason
why this is my final choice.

mponent Analysis - Materials

Components

Required
Characteristics
Strong: The handle and lock must
be strong for the user to hold and
for the clip to hold in place when
shut
Safe: The material must also be
safe and smooth so that the user
will not get harmed when using
the product.
Strength to weight ratio: The
strength of the material must be
more than the weight of the
product sitting onto of it or any
added weight added to the overall
product.
Aesthetics: The product must look
aesthetically pleasing to the user
as it will be in their car. The
product must also display some
sort of high visibility strip so that
it can be seen in the dark and in
an emergency.
Durable: This is the outside of the
product so it must be durable and
last a certain time as it will need
to hold everything.
Lightweight: The product will need
to be lightweight as the user will
need to lift it in an emergency.
This then means that the product
needs to be more user friendly.
This is because it might need to
be transported during an
emergency.

Strong: The material will need to

need to make a decision on what materials I will

use for my final product. I have given a picture of
the component and then listed what characteristics
the product will need. I have then listed a few
materials that could be used for that specific
component and wrote about why they would be
suitable. Based on why they would be suitable, I
then made a decision on what material I will use

Materials Considered

Aluminium

Steel

Plywood

Acrylic

MDF

Polyethylene terephthalate

Polypropylene

Reasons for
Consideration
Aluminium is cheaper than steel,
however they are not as strong.
Where the product lacks in
strength it makes up weight. This
is because the material is very
lightweight making it very user
friendly.
Steel is a very strong material
however it can be very heavy and
can rust if it is put in the rain for
example. It would be good as the
user will be able to hold the
product in a very secure and safe
way.
Plywood is a very viable material
as it is lightweight and also very
strong and durable so it will last
the products life cycle. A finish
can also be applied to make it
aesthetically pleasing.
Acrylic can be relatively cheap
and can be cut to a certain size
using the laser cutter so complex
shapes can be cut out. It can also
come in different colours.
MDF is very strong and durable so
it can be used for the main
product as it will last a long time.
However the material can be quite
heavy and therefore not user
friendly.
PET is a very lightweight a flexible
material, making it very ideal for
the purpose. Although, it is
lightweight, PET is not very strong
and could be easily broken if
enough pressure is applied to it.
Polypropylene is a very ideal
material as it is very lightweight
and very flexible however it also
has a much higher strength
compared to PET so it will be able
to hold the fire extinguisher in.

Final choice and

justifications
Aluminium
I have chosen aluminium to use as
the material for this component.
This is because the material is
much more lightweight for use
and will make the product more
user friendly. It also will not stain if
the product was to be taken
outside into the rain. A shine can
be applied to make the product
look brand new and aesthetically
pleasing. It also is quite strong.

Plywood
I have chosen plywood as my final
choice as it has all of the
characteristics I will need for the
component. A finish can be
applied such as sanding or paint
to make it aesthetically pleasing.
The nature of plywood makes it a
very strong material as it is
formed via layers. This is ideal as
it will need to hold all of the
materials inside. I will also need it
to hold the fire extinguisher on
the exterior of the product.
Compared to other woods,
plywood is lightweight so it is
ideal for the user as not as much
effort will be needed to move or
transport the material.
Polypropylene
I have chosen polypropylene for
my chosen material because it
meets all of the characteristics
that I need for my component.
Polypropylene can also be dyed so
it can meet the theme of the rest
of the product. By using
polypropylene, it will also not
damage the finish applied on the
product or the actual fire
extinguisher. It can be injection
moulded also so I can use holes to
screw it to the product.

rototype/Testing

This images shows me testing the angles

that I will use in the creation of my
product. I have looked at ways and joints
that I could use to put the side pieces of
my product together. I have decided to
create a 60 degree angle which will join
them into a triangle. I have used my
knowledge from other A levels to know
that an equilateral triangle is made up of
three equal angles adding up to make
180 degrees. This brought me to the
conclusion that I will have to use an
angle of 60 degrees in my kit.

The design for my product consists

of two triangles being held
together by three lengths of wood
with ends that are angled so that
when they are joined together it
forms an equilateral triangle. To
make sure that I got the right
angle I did some research and
tested the angle out to make sure
that I got it right. I used the
internet to look at angles as shown
below. As I need an equilateral I
looked at the image and found out
that all of my angles will ned to be
60 degrees. I made sure this is
true by using my maths knowledge
to make sure that they will all add
up to 180 degrees. I took a piece
of plywood and used the schools
circular saw and changed the
angle to 60. It was important to
make sure that the angles were
cut from the right side both sides
as otherwise they would not fit.
Once they had been cut out, I used
multiple elastic bands and twisted
them so that it would be tighter
and stay in place. This then
showed me that it would work.

On this slide, it shows off my prototype and testing

before creating my actual final product. Testing is a very
important part of my project. This is because it has
shown me problems that will occur with the product that I
am going to make. I will take this into account very
carefully when creating my product. On of the problems
that I have found is that the measurements and
dimensions were originally too small meaning that I had
to make it bigger. I also needed to find out the correct
angle for my product to com together. I took pieces of

This image shows the prototype that I

have created. I have made it from foam
board and stuck the outside pieces
together so that they are on the outside
rather than the inside. I have also
included the smaller triangle on the
outside. This will be the triangle that the
warning triangle will sit on while in the
car. I also used wooden dowels to support
the foam board. However, I will not use
dowels in my actual product. This is
because the wood will be glued down
instead.

For my prototype, I made the

main body out of foam board. I
mainly checked this to see if my
dimensions were to work
properly when the equipment
was inside of the product. I
came to find out that it was not
big enough to hold all of my
items. From what I have found, I
will make the product bigger
and check again. To do this, I
created another model and
checked whether it is big
enough. This what gave me the
measurements for my final
product. By creating a model, it
has told me what I need to
change about my design. It has
also given me an idea for what
materials I will use for all of the
different components. For
example, I know that the main
body will need to be made from
a strong material. An example
of this could be plywood as it is
made up of many different
layers. I have also learnt that I
will need to make the smaller
triangle much bigger for the
warning triangle.

ogo Design

I started off by setting up a page that is size 600mm x 300mm. I have selected this size because it is the size
of the laser cutter that I will be using to cut out of. I have also changed the layout of my page by adding a grid.
I have spaced the gridlines 2.5mm apart and have selected to show and snap to grid. This will help me when
using vector tools. I have also the transformation dockers which will help me as I can change the size or ration
for example of any vector that I select.
I then used the box shape vector tool to create a square box that is
the size 210mm x 210mm. I got this size from measuring the inside
triangle on the kit. I made sure that when measuring that I made
the box smaller than the actual length so that it would leave a
wooden flange visible.
I used the line vector tool to draw a line from the centre point of
the top of the square to the bottom right corner. I then repeated
this to the bottom left corner giving me a triangle shape. I then
used the dimension tool to measure from one point to another to
check that the measurements were right. This is where I changed
the size so that the size would be 200mm making it just smaller
than the size on the actual kit.
I then grabbed the RAC logo from the internet and saved it to my
area. I then imported into that document and changed it into a
drawing. I dont this by selecting it and clicking edit bitmap which
let me just have the outline. I then changed the outline to black
and give it no fill. This means that when I put it in the laser cutter,
it will cut where the outline is.
I put the new RAC logo onto the triangle and changed the design by
adding shapes and text to make it more aesthetically pleasing as
shown to the left. I ended up by just adding the RAC logo into the
middle and making it much simpler but more attractive to look at.

The last thing I did was to add a triangle into the middle and cut
them out of red and white acrylic plastic and then fit them into
each other onto the front of the kit.

This slide explains the process of creating my logo.

I will then use this working on my manufacturing
plan. I will take the images and some of the
information to form it as part of my plan. This also
helps me as I have used several complicated tools
so I can always come back to this and look at how I
done a certain task for example. From creating this
logo, it has improved some of design and ICT skills.

aluation Against Specification

Function
The product must contain all equipment needed to suit the needs of any emergency that the use will encounter on the road. The
equipment that the kit will contain includes; a fire extinguisher, first aid kit, warning triangle, high visibility jacket and finally jump
leads.
My product has met this specification point as all of the equipment is inside the kit to that the user will be ready for any type of
emergency. The first aid kit, high visibility jacket and jump leads are being held inside the kit whereas the warning triangle and fire
extinguisher are on the exterior of the product.
The kit must be easily accessible during an emergency. For example, if there is a car crash the kit must be easily accessible for the
user to grab, therefore meaning the kit must be lightweight and not take up too much room in the car.
I have met this specification as I have included a sturdy handle onto the product. This makes it easy for the user to just pick up easily
making it user friendly. I also have a clip so that it is very easy to access the inside of the kit if needed in the case of an emergency.
The kit must be sturdy and therefore not roll in the back of the car with other items such as shopping etc. It must also be sturdy to
not damage the actual boot.
This specification point has been met as the kit stands on its side. The shape of the product is also triangular and flat meaning that it
will not roll about. I have made sure that the product can easily stand on its side without worry of it falling onto personal items etc.
Ergonomics
The kit must have a handle/strap to be able for the user to lift it or transport it with ease. This is because it will be much more use
friendly if the user can remove the entire kit using a handle.
When in the design process of my design, I have made sure include some sort of handle/strap to make sure that it is user friendly. I
have met this point as the one side of the kit has a handle that is comfortable to hold making it ergonomic and user friendly.
The product must be safe for the user to handle. This means that there must be not sharp edges to the outside of the product or any
parts to the product which could harm the user without intending to.
I have met this specification point as I have made sure that there are no sharp edges or components as part of the product. I have
done this by sanding down all of the wood on the surface and the edges giving it a smooth feel. I also checked that all of the
equipment was safe to use.
The product must be easy to remove the products from. This means that the items must be easy to take out. For example, the
compartments must be easy to take apart in the case of an emergency.
One of the main design features of my product is how easy it is to remove items from the kit. I have included a fire extinguisher on
the outside of the product. This is because a fire extinguisher is one of the items that would be needed most urgently. I have also
designed my product so that the warning triangle sits on the outside making it very simple for the user to remove it from the product.
All other equipment is inside with a very easy clip to remove.

Materials
The materials for the product must be strong enough to hold all of the materials. This is to make it safe for the user to keep inside
their car.
I have met the specification point as the base material I have used for my product is plywood. This is a very strong material as it is
made up of many different veneers. By using this material, it is strong enough to hold all of the materials, equipment and
components together into one kit.
The materials that I use for the product must be lightweight enough for the user to lift easily in the case of an emergency. Also it
needs to be lightweight before adding the equipment into the product.
I have tested the product by having numerous individuals use my product including lifting the product. I have manufactured my
product so that it is easy for the user to lift the kit out of a car.
The materials selected must be aesthetically pleasing. Examples of this could be a material where a finish can be applied or dyed in
manufacture.
I have chosen to make my product out of timber. This means that I can apply a very nice finish the product. I applied Danish oil to my
product giving it a shine and therefore making it aesthetically pleasing. I have also used a silver shine aluminium with my product to
separate it from the wood and make the product look more post modern. This means I have met this specification point
Aesthetics
The product must be easily seen by the user via a reflective strip or a finish that is applied to the product so that it can seen in the
dark.
My product does not contain any reflective materials however I have designed the product so that the warning triangle will sit on the
front of the product. This makes the product so that it can be seen in the dark by the user and therefore meeting this specification
point.
The product will need to have an innovative and creative shape. This is because my brief tells me so and because my client prefers a
creative design.
During the design process, I came up with many different designs with different shapes. I have chosen this design because of the
innovative shape of a triangle. I also found from my existing products research that not many kits exist which are triangular and often
square or rectangular making my product very aesthetically pleasing and therefore meeting this specification point.
The product must be aesthetically pleasing. This could be done by the colours used in the product or the theme which is used
throughout.
In the manufacture of my product, I mainly used red and black to give the theme of warning making it eye catching to the user. I
have used a logo on the front of my product which meets the red and black of the warning triangle and fire extinguisher. I have also
used a innovative shape for my product making it more eye catching. This tells me that I have met this specification point.

Strengths of My Product
I think that my product is very good for many different reasons. My product has met all of the specification points that I have given
myself. Some of these include; The product must contain all equipment needed to suit the needs of any emergency that the use will
encounter on the road. The equipment that the kit will contain includes; a fire extinguisher, first aid kit, warning triangle, high
visibility jacket and finally jump leads and The kit must have a handle/strap to be able for the user to lift it or transport it with ease.
This is because it will be much more use friendly if the user can remove the entire kit using a handle. One of the main features of my
product is that it is user friendly. This is because of how easy it is to grab and access/use the kit. I have added a handle to make it
much easier to lift and a clip so that it will stay shut when needed but is just as easy to open if under pressure. The products are
separated making it very easy to get what you want rather to searching round through the bottom of a box to find what you
want/need. I have also designed the product so that it can stand up making it very easy to place in the back of a car or in the boot of
a car during transit. Due to the shape of the product, it is very hard for it to tip over onto the road for example or damage anything
inside the back of a car. I have made a divider inside the kit for the user to easily grab what they want. I have also made it removable
in case the user will need the box as a storage device to store personal goods in. An example of this could be that the user needs
something kept safe and will not roll about in the back of a car. It will also make the job of carrying the items easier. I have also made
the product very safe so that there are no sharp edges or equipment that could harm or damage anything. To do this I have gone
over the product thoroughly sanding down all of the sides. I then went over the product with Danish oil to give it a shine and a
smooth surface. I also took care to choose all of the equipment went so that it could not harm children, the user or damage any
items in the boot of a car. My product also holds of the equipment that was mentioned in the specification. I have spoken to my client
and the target market to come up with a list of items to include within my specification. I then designed my product to hold this
equipment. I designed my product in a clever way so I can the most of the space but still make the product look aesthetically
pleasing. Due to the finish I have applied along with the mix of materials I have used, my product looks very innovative and modern
making it the sort of design that my client and target market will want. I have also followed a red and black theme making the
product very eye catching to the audience.

Weaknesses of My Product
One of the main weaknesses to my product is getting it all back into the kit. I have made it so that it is easy to take out in case of an
emergency, however it is not as easy to put all of the equipment back into place. An example of this is the jump leads. They are
snuggly fit into the right side of my kit however when they are taken out, it is very hard to put it back into the kit without damaging
the leads or the wood. The jacket and first aid kit can too sometimes be a struggle to put back into place. It can be quite a heavy
product after carrying it over long distances making it not ideal for the user to carry over a long period of time. This does not matter
lifting it from the car to the road however carrying through a shop could be a struggle. The handle can be hard to hold due to the
narrow gap and being close to the product unless you have smaller hands.
What Would I Change if I Could Redo My Project?
If I was to redo my project, I would create a tube inside the right hand part of the kit to wrap the jump leads around to make putting
the product away much easier for the user. It could also be some sort of cable management just to make it more user friendly. I
would also make the wood that the handle is attached to bigger as it is close to the product and can make people with big hands
hard to hold. To change this, I would double up on the wood or use a thicker piece so the gap to hold it is not tight.
Consideration of Industrial Process
During my last client interview, we discussed how and on what scale the product will be produced on. We have also looked at ways of
the product being manufactured. As this product is constructed by joining methods such as adhesives, it will be hard for the product
to be machine worked meaning that the price of the product will cost more due to labour costs. However, the wooden and plastic
components can be machine made making it more cost effective. These will be constructed via saws and moulding machines.

Time Management
Throughout my project, I gave myself a time plan of what to do and when to do everything over 20 weeks. I think that throughout my
project I stuck to this very well. I have stuck to everything I needed to including all of the deadlines that I have set myself. Anything
that I was behind on throughout the project, I met and caught up with.
Client
I decided to have another interview with my client from RAC. We discussed the product and the cost and on what scale it will be
made. I have also met all of the requirements that the client has set me such as specifications and what he wants from the product.
What Went Well?
There was a lot of things that went well throughout my project. I have met all of my deadlines that I have set myself as well as
meeting any deadlines my teacher had set me. I met all of the specification points and goals that I gave myself to complete.
Throughout my project, I also improved on many different skills such as ICT, drawing and skills relating to different equipment and
machinery in the workshop. These are then skills I will take on in my future.
What Would You Change?
If I was to start my project again, I would reference as I went along rather than trying to find the original link at the very end of the
project as it would save me time. At the end of my project.
Health and Safety
During my project, I learnt about different machinery and tools, this meant that I had to learn the health and safety rules within a
workshop and in an ICT suite. I took care when using any machinery and tools and followed the basic rules such as tucking in my tie
and making sure I have no loose clothes or hair as well as checking my shoes were tied.
Referencing
Whenever I gained information or an image from a source, I referenced it with the original source link/name and mentioned whether
the information was copyright and whether the source was reliable.
