SATELLITE

Satellites are celestial bodies which revolve round

another celestial body in an orbit. Earth is an
example of a natural satellite of sun; similarly moon
is a satellite of earth. Artificial Satellite is an artificial
object which has been intentionally placed into an
orbit to revolve around Earth to perform a specific
task

SATELLITE LAUNCH
VEHICLES

Satellite launch vehicle is a rocket-powered

vehicle used to transport a spacecraft beyond
Earths atmosphere, either into orbit around
Earth or to some other destination in outer space

SLV DESIGN

Design of a surveillance satellite to keep a

constant eye on any suspicious activity
along the Pak-India border including
detection of any major movement of
Indian forces along the whole length of
border area

DISCIPLINES INVOLVED
Discipline

Purpose / Contribution

Aeronautics /
Astronautics

Mission design and derivation of design requirements

Systems Engineering

For maintaining design baseline and derivation of subsystem

requirements

Communications
Engineering

Telemetry, Tracking and Command (TTC) Subsystem design,

Computer Engineering

Design of onboard data handling which includes onboard computers and

computer buses

Software Engineering

Design of onboard software which runs all the onboard applications as

well as low level control software

Electrical Engineering

Design of power subsystem for generation, storage and distribution of

electrical power to onboard equipment

Controls Engineering

Design of Attitude and Orbit Control (AOCS) System

Aerodynamics

For mission launch / flight / landing design

Thermal

Design of Thermal Control subsystem

Propulsion

Design of propulsion subsystems which actually transports the

spacecraft to the desired orbits

Mechanical

For design of spacecraft structure and mechanics

OBJECTIVE FUNCTIONS
Surveillance
To detect all kinds of suspicious activities

along the border in near real time

To collect data regarding any military

activity, including exercises, movement
or major infrastructure development by
Indian Army and Air Force

DESIGN VARIABLES
Payload
We can vary the payload including a

high resolution reconnaissance camera

to achieve the assigned task
Propulsion
Propulsion system can also be tailored

according to mission requirement

8

DESIGN VARIABLES
Onboard

Electronics

Onboard electronics system can be

selected and changed as per mission

requirements
Shape

/ Structure

Overall aerodynamics shape and

structure of the SLV can be varied

depending upon the assigned task
9

SYSTEM PARAMETERS
Orbit

/ Altitude

Orbit / Altitude at which the satellite is to be

placed can be chosen as design parameter,

as we can fix it within Low Earth Orbit (LEO)
to meet the mission objectives
Orbital

Speed

Similarly orbital speed is also a system

parameter which can be fixed as per our

mission requirements
10

CONSTRAINTS AND
BOUNDS

Cost / Budget
The maximum amount of budget allocated for

the project is the biggest constraint

Schedule
In order to meet operation by a certain date,

improvement need to be stopped at some point

International Rules and Regulations

Cannot

violate
International
regulations on the subject

rules

and
11

CONSTRAINTS AND
BOUNDS

Available Technology
Current space technology and facilities available

with Pakistan is also a limiting factor

Political Challenges
Every changing political situation also becomes a

constraint in most of the cases

Security of Data
The security of data so available from the satellite is

also a constraint as we do not want any third person

to obtain or hack or satellite
12

CONCLUSION
In

this presentation just a fair idea

about the preliminary design phase
has been given

Various

examples
of
design
objectives, variables, parameters
and constraints have been explained
