The Summer Internship program involves the student in


gaining field experiences thereby giving them an
opportunity to utilize their skills integrate their
theoretical knowledge, share insights , explore plausible
areas and establish links with various stakeholders and
voluntary organizations
Worked as a trainee at Cancer Aid Society which works
for the betterment of health and prevention of deadly
disease i.e. cancer

CANCER AID SOCIETY


Cancer Aid Society is a non-profit, national level, social secular
Non-Government Organization registered under ISO 9001:2008,
Societies Registration Act in 1987, income tax u/s 80 g, FCRA
Working in tune with the guidelines of National Cancer Control
Programme of World Health Organization and National Cancer
Control Program of Government Of India
Aims at decreasing the mortality by targeting 2/3rd of all
cancers through primary prevention and early detection
Generate awareness amongst children and adults in the
regional languages throughout the country

Works for the control of cancer.
Implements its programmes in 3 stages :

1.Awareness
2.Detection
3.Palliative Care.

TOBACCO

contains nicotine (addictive drug) which


takes only 6 seconds to reach your brain
identified as risk factor for 6 of the 8
leading causes of death, one of them is
cancer
has 4,000 chemicals, out of which, 60
chemicals are responsible for cancer.

TOBACCO RELATED FACTS

Tobacco epidemic is one of the biggest public threat the


world has ever faced. More than 5 million of deaths are
the result of direct tobacco use while more than
6,00,000 are the result of non-smokers being exposed
to second hand smoking.
Tobacco use kills 5.4 million people a year-an average of
1 person every 6 seconds and account for 1 in 10
adult death world wide.
100 million deaths are estimated in 20th century, if
current trend continue, there will be up to 1 billion
death in the 21st century.
Almost half of the worlds children breath air polluted by
tobacco smoke

WORK DONE
SURVEY METHOD : Investigating the root cause
of tobacco consumption.
PICTORIAL REPRESENATION : Depicting anything
through pictures are much more effective than
writing.
SIGNATURE CAMPAIGN : Knowing public opinion
on tobacco.

SURVEY DETAILS

survey was done with the help of questionnaire.


each questionnaire contains 17 self designed questions.
questions were related to demographic profile, history
and causes of tobacco use, attitudinal change of family
and health effects after using tobacco.
total number of 20 tobacco users were randomly
selected from the identified area
illiterate participants were provided help in filling the
questionnaire

FINDINGS OF SURVEY

80% participants were unaware of the ill effects of


tobacco when they started using tobacco
Causes - peer pressure, fun, family environment,
depression, unawareness of its ill effects and their
own will to taste it
Peer pressure was found to be the major cause for
taking tobacco

14/20 participants tried to leave tobacco due to their


different personal reasons (family pressure, awareness, ill
health effects and others) and out of which 3 of them were
successfully de-addicted
Persons with strong will power to get de-addicted were
more successful in achieving their goal than persons with
weak will power
The child becomes more prone to use tobacco if his/her
parents have the same habit

SIGNATURE CAMPAIGN
Organised at three places of Lucknow i.e., Charbagh Railway
Station, Fun Republic Mall and Saharaganj Mall.
Organised by team of 7-8 members.
Organised to gather the opinion of public.
Organised on World No Tobacco Day i.e. 31 May 2015

OBSERVATION OF SIGNATURE CAMPAIGN


Most of the tobacco users were ignoring to participate in
signature campaign
One of the tobacco user was of the opinion start tobacco,
start life

Family members suffering from ill effect of tobacco were more


participative
Most of the participants were of the opinion that government
should take more effective initiatives to control the use of
tobacco
Most of the people were aware of its ill effects
Even primary school going children were aware that tobacco is

LEARNINGS
Exposed to new professional setting and different work
area.
Enhanced my knowledge of causes, warning signs and
symptoms of different types of cancer
Enhanced my Communication and Creativity Skills
Improved my basic knowledge of MS-Office
Introduced new bilateral method i.e. signature campaign,
of making people aware and knowing public opinion at
the same time
Gained knowledge about functioning of NGO

CONCLUSION

This Summer Internship has tremendously helped me in


enhancing my knowledge, skills and attitudes. It gave me
a platform to understand certain nuances of working in a
professional setting. Working with Cancer Aid society
made me realize the importance of tobacco awareness.
The alarming rate of increased tobacco users should be
controlled. The government should make strict laws, rules
and regulation against tobacco. Besides this, family and
society are equally responsible for mobilizing the people
on anti-tobacco.
