Introduction.
 The English word “leadership”. Is derived
from the old English laedan which means, “to
show the way, to be head of”, it is a word that
gives the image of a shepherd in front of his
flock.
 Arabic: Qiyāda, Qāid. French and Spanish use
le leader and el lider respectively.
 “Process of moving people in a planned
direction by motivating them to action through
non compulsive means”. General or specific.
What is Leadership?
 “..the process by which the leader seeks the
voluntary participation of the followers in an
effort to reach organization objective.” R.
Beekun.
 “Any action that focuses resources towards a
truly beneficial objective”. Ismail Noor.
 “the ability to move or influence others toward
achieving individual or group goals.” Cliff
Ricketts.
Characteristics of leadership in
Islam.
 I t is trust (Amanah). Al-Nisa (4):58.
 Enjoying good and forbid evil. Al-Imran
(3):104, 110.
 Necessity, “if you are three on the journey
make one of you as a leader”. Hadith.
 Everybody is a leader in his or her own
capacity.
The components of leadership.

Who is a Leader?
 A leader is “an individual in a group who is
responsible to direct and co-ordinate activities of the
group”.
 He or she is a person with dream and vision that will
improve community or a group or at least some part
of larger community.
 A person who occupies a position of responsibility on
coordinating the activities of the members of the
group in their task of attaining common goal”.

Quality of a Leader.
 Honest and integrity.
 Vision or forward looking. (tadbir).
 Competence.
 Physical vitality and stamina.
 Knowledge and wisdom.
 Courage.
 Patience.

 Willingness to accept the responsibility.
 Good leaders are good followers.
 Eloquence.
Who is a Follower(s)?
 Is someone who who supports, admires
or believes in a particular person, group
or idea.
 “a person who does what someone else
does or tells him to do”.
Qualities of a Follower.
 Obedient.
 Courage.

 Willingness to assume responsibility.

 Competence.

 Self management.

 Unity.
Situation.
 Righteousness.
 Beneficial.
