Introduction

In Malaysia rental house is very common for students and fresh graduate worker, which is
they not has stable financial or they just live there for short period of time. In the rental
houses, the house is not complete with furniture and home appliance. The issue is tenant
need to buy new furniture for them use in the house and inconvenience them when they want
to move out.

Since that, we realized that we need furniture that portable and easy to manage. After do
some research, we have design a furniture which is made from the cardboard. As we know
cardboard is very light material and easy to shape it. Other feature that we add is multipurpose furniture, that is can save space for your house. It can be use as wardrobe, book
shelf and portable table at the same time. So this furniture is collapsible, portable,
lightweight, and user-friendly.

Theory

Furniture from cardboard is idea from Zachary Rotholz.

Zachary Rotholz is Founder & CEO at chairigami and graduating from

Yale in Mechanical Engineering.

They have design and manufacture furniture since 2011 and their
product is chair, table and shelf.

Our project is innovate their product become multi-purpose and

collapsible furniture.

Characteristics

We design this furniture with three function, that is

wardrobe, book shelf and portable table

The main material is cardboard, as we know

cardboard is made from cardboard box is basically
made up of a flute (made up of recycled paper),
sandwiched between two liners

Engineering properties
Cardboard

Durability
Cardboard is known for its durability. The wood fibers that make up cardboard are strong and
resilient. Cardboard is puncture resistant and does not tear easily. The arched design of the
interior fluting lends durability to the cardboard as well. The fluting is lined up vertically, so
the interior paper forms columns that are able to support a great deal of weight.

Sustainability
Since cardboard is made up of wood fibers, it is recyclable and sustainable. According to the
Corrugated Packaging Alliance, the average corrugated box is made with 43 percent
recycled fiber. Cardboard is also the most recycled material, and nearly all of the recycled
cardboard is made into new cardboard products. Cardboard is sustainable because the raw
material comes from trees, a renewable resource. Ninety-three percent of all corrugated
boxes are made with raw material supplied by the Sustainable Forestry Initiative, an
organization that supports forest management.

 Insulating
Corrugated cardboard has insulating properties due to the fluting design of its interior.
According to Teachers Domain, when force is applied to an arch, it transfers along the curve
of the arch to the base. Therefore, the arched flutes allow the cardboard to tolerate more
external force. The flutes also trap air between the two layers of cardboard, extending the
amount of time needed to transfer heat energy from the exterior of the box to the interior.

Customizable
Cardboard is easily customized to fit the needs of the end consumer. Cereal boxes are not
corrugated, while packing boxes are. Cardboard can also be cut and folded to make many
different sized and shaped boxes or displays. The paper material is easily printed with logos,
warnings and other information. It can be treated to be flame retardant or to control static
electricity. Cardboard boxes are often custom-made to fit shipping requirements or available
shelf space.

Pvc pipe
PVC is a thermoplastic polymer. Its properties are usually categorized based
on rigid and flexible PVCs.
PVC has high hardness and mechanical properties
PVC is a polymer with good insulation properties, because of its higher polar
nature the electrical insulating property is inferior to non polar polymers such
as polyethylene and polypropylene.

Polystyrene
It has good electrical properties, excellent gamma radiation resistance and
can be radiation sterilised but has poor chemical and UV resistance,

Mortise are commonly used on many households due to their durability,

strength, and resistance from any forced intrusion into a house.

Mortise also has aesthetic value and has strong connectivity methods.

PREVIOUS STUDY
Collapsible furniture :

Collapsible objects are one of the smartest ways to solve space-saving problems.

They are expandable and collapsible.

For example of collapsible objects, such as umbrellas, tents, tripods and picnic chairs.

Collapsible object have to be reusable , therefore, they have to be well-constructed to last a long
time.

It can not be a disposal (pelupusan) object.

Expandable and collapsible furniture is suitable for solving the issues of space-saving in crowded
space.

Much collapsible furniture is designed for flexibility and mobility (pergerakan) .

Advantages :
it can be stored in small space.
It very convenient for a temporary usage.
It very portable and lightweight.

Conclusion
One difficult task that I had to research and solve was that of the joints and
hinges to simplify the furniture, making it user friendly.
