Limited, Steel Authority of India Limited.

IOCL - BARAUNI REFINERY

Barauni Refineryin theBiharstate of India
was built in collaboration with theSoviet
Unionat a cost of Rs.49.4 crores and went on
stream in July, 1964.The initial capacity of
2MMTPA was expanded to 3 MMTPA by 1969.
The present capacity of this refinery is 6.00
MMTPA.

PIPELINE DIVISION
Anoil depotis an industrial facility
for the storage of oil from which
theseproductsare
usually
transported to end users or further
storage facilities. An oil depot
typically has tankage, either above
ground or underground, and oil
gantries for the discharge of
products intowagon, tankers or
pipelines.

WHITE OIL GANTRY

BLACK OIL GANTRY

WHITE OIL GANTRY

Barauni Refinery has the separate White
Oil Gantry for Loading lighter product like
High Speed Diesel (HSD), Superior
Kerosene Oil (SKO), Straight Run Neptha
(SRN), Motor Spirit (MS) also known as
Petrol in the wagon.

BLACK OIL GANTRY

It has separate Black Oil Gantry for
loading heavier product like Furnace
Oil,
Carbon
Black
Feed
Stock
(CBFS)and Bitumen for loading and
unloading in the wagon.
Lighter hydrocarbon products are
loaded with Accuload Automatic Feed
System. Positive displacement meter
is fixed which controls the flow of
while oil..

An Overview

Barauni refinery has its own thermal

power station for production of steam
and electricity for its own requirement. It
is very important unit of Barauni Refinery.
45 MW of electricity is the requirement of
Barauni Refinery for it different units and
5 MW is required for its residential
township. Fuel for steam generation in
boiler comes from AVU.

BOILERS
Barauni refinery has 5 boilers. Four
boilers are of 75 ton and one boiler
is of 150 ton. To produce steam on a
large
volume
Barauni
refinery
haswatertube boiler. In water
tube boiler water circulates in
tubes heated externally by the fire.
Furnace
oil
is
used
inside
thefurnace, creating hot gas which
heats water.

Every boiler has 4 burners. The heated

water then rises into thesteam drum.
Here, saturated steam is drawn off the top
of the drum. In some services, the steam
will
reenter
the
furnace
through
asuperheaterto become superheated.
Superheated steam is defined as steam
that is heated above the boiling point at a
given pressure.
Superheated steam is a dry gas and
therefore used to drive turbines, since
water droplets can severely damage turbine
blades.

Boiler mounting
Mainly seven mounting are required and
essential to a Boiler:
Water level indicator (water gauge)
Main steam stop valve
Pressure gauge
Feed check valve
Fusible plug
Blow down valve. (Blow off cock)
Safety valve

Boiler Accessories
These are auxiliary parts required for steam
boilers for their proper operation and to
increased efficiency of the boilers. Boilers
Accessories are as under:
Feed pump
Injector
Economizer
Air preheater
Super heater
Steam separator
Steam trap

FEED PUMP
The feed pump is a pump which is used to deliver
feed water to the boiler.
Double feed pump is commonly employed for
medium size boilers.

Types of feed pumps

Reciprocating Pumps
Simplex, Duplex, Triplex
Rotary pumps
Centrifugal pumps

TURBINE
Aturbineis a rotary mechanical device
that extractsenergyfrom afluidflow and
converts it into usefulwork. A turbine is
aturbo machinewith at least one moving
part called a rotor assembly, which is a
shaft or drum withbladesattached.
Moving fluid acts on the blades so that
they move and impart rotational energy
to the rotor. Early turbine examples
arewindmillsandwaterwheels.

Atmospheric & Vacuum

Distillation Unit (AVU I/II/III)
Overview:
Refining of crude oils or petroleum
essentially consists of primary separation
processes
and
secondary
conversion
processes. The petroleum refining process is
the separation of the different Hydrocarbons
present in the crude oil into useful fractions .

Pre-treatment Of Crude Oils

Pre-treatment Of Crude Oils
Crude oil comes from the ground, which
contains variety of substances like gases,
water, dirt(minerals) etc. Pre treatment of
the crude oil is important if the crude oil is
to be transported effectively and to be
processed without causing fouling and
corrosion in the subsequent operation
starting
from
distillation,
catalytic
reforming
and
secondary
conversion
processes.
