LANGUAGE ATTITUDES AND MOTIVATION

AMONG UNDERGRADUATE SPORTS
EDUCATION STUDENTS IN LEARNING
ENGLISH AS SECOND LANGUAGE

INTRODUCTION
As defined by Coles and Werquin (2005), learners
motivation is a range of an individuals behaviours in
terms of the way they personally initiate things,
determine the way things are done, do something with
intensity and show perseverance to see something
through to an end.

Learners motivation in learning language is

important as it plays role in reflecting the
comprehensible input of the target language.

The higher the comprehensible input of the

language learning, the higher the proficiency
of the learner.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
In the context of teaching English as Second
Language in Malaysian context, there are
large numbers of students who lack the
mastery of the English language struggle to
deal with the language.
Despite the efforts and proactive actions
taken and implemented by the educators and
policy makers, the problem is further
compounded as these students also
experience problems in such areas as
thinking, memory, concentration, motivation,
and organization of ideas, planning and
decision-making.

The problems could be worse when

these conditions affect the students
motivation in learning English
language.
Therefore, this study is conducted
to examine the level of
undergraduate sports students
attitudes and motivation in learning
English language in ESL context.

OBJECTIVES OF THE
STUDY
1) To examine the undergraduate
sports students attitude towards
learning English language in ESL
context
2) To examine the undergraduate
sports students level of motivation
learning English language in ESL
context?

RESEARCH QUESTIONS
1) What is the undergraduate sports
students attitude towards learning
English language in ESL context?
2) What is the undergraduate sports
students level of motivation
learning English language in ESL
context?

LITERATURE REVIEW
MOTIVATION
Learners motivation is a range of an
individuals behaviours in terms of the way
they personally initiate things, determine the
way things are done, do something with
intensity and show perseverance to see
something through to an end.
Coles and Werquin (2005)
Learners motivation in learning language is
important as it plays role in reflecting the
comprehensible input of the target language.

In language learning, motivation is the

crucial force which determine whether a
learner embarks on task at all, how much
energy the learner devotes to it, and how
long he perseveres.
Littlewood (1995)
It is a complex phenomenon which includes
many components: the individuals drive,
need for achievement and success,
curiosity, desire for stimulation and new
experience, and so on.

MOTIVATION FOR LANGUAGE LEARNING

The extent to which an individual works or
strives to learn the language because of a
desire to do so and the satisfaction
experienced in this activity.
Gardner (1985)
Motivation in language learning is the
actions and efforts made by the learners in
order to acquire and to master their
understanding the target language
because of their own desire to do so and to
obtain the satisfaction once succeeded

ATTITUDE
An inference which is made on the basis
of a complex of beliefs about the
attitude object
(Likert, 1932)
The sum total of a man's instinctions and
feelings, prejudice or bias,
preconceived notions, fears, threats,
and convictions about any specified
topic
(Gardner, 1980)

A disposition to respond favourably or

unfavourably to an object, person,
institution, or event
(Ajzan, 1988)
A hypothetical construct used to explain
the direction and persistence of human
behaviour
(Baker, 1992)

MODELS
Affective aspect of language learning including
Krashens (1981) Monitor Model and Schumann's
(1986) Acculturation Model.
Socioeducational Model (Gardner, 1985)
- two kinds of motivation, the integrative and the
instrumental.
- The integrative motivation refers to learners desire
to at least communicate or at most integrate (or even
assimilate) with the members of the target language.
- The instrumental motivation refers to more
functional reasons for learning the language such as
getting a better job, a higher salary or passing an
examination.
