Reliability Definitions
It is the probability of failure-free
performance over a given period of time
under stated conditions.

Key Terms
Probability:
A measure of the likelihood of observing an
event.
Failure:
The event in which any item or part of an
item does not, or would not perform its
intended function.

Key Terms
Time:
The universal measure of duration, defined
relative to the function performed;
calendar/clock time, operating hours, cycles,
etc.
Conditions:
A set of operational conditions including;
design loads, environmental effects and
maintenance procedures.

Quality and Reliability

Quality is generally defined as the totality of
features and characteristics of a product or
service that bear on its ability to satisfy
given needs.
Reliability is a time dependent
characteristic.
Reliability may be viewed as the quality of
the products operational performance over
time.

Maintainability
Is the probability that a failed component or
system will be repaired to a specified
condition within a given period of time,
following a stated procedures.

Key Terms
Repairable Item:
An item which can be restored to perform all
of its required functions by corrective
maintenance.
Time:
Expressed in clock time and includes hands-on
repair time (excluding any delay).

Key Terms
Repair/Restoration:
All actions performed as a result of failure, to
restore an item to a specified condition.
These can include any or all of the following
steps: localization, isolation, disassembly,
interchange, re-assembly, alignment and
checkout.

Availability
Is the probability that a component or system
is operational at a given point in time when
used under stated conditions.
[Used for repairable systems]

Availability
This is a comprehensive measure of
performance which accounts for both the
probability of failure-free operation
(reliability) and the probability of repair
(maintainability).
