MOST Sexually

transmitted diseases are

caused by either a virus
or a bacteria.

Types of STDs

Herpes
Gonorrhea
Genital warts
Syphilis
HIV/AIDS
Pubic Lice
Chlamydia

HPV
The human papillomavirus (HPV) is the
most common STI in the United
States. There are more than 40
different strands of HPV and many do
not cause any health problems.
In 90% of cases the bodys immune
system clears the infection naturally
within 2 years.

Some cases may not be cleared and

can lead to genital warts (bumps
around the genitals that can be
small or large, raised or flat, or
shaped like cauliflower) or cervical
cancer and other HPV related
cancers.

TRICHOMONIASIS
is a common STI that is caused by
infection with a protozoan parasite
called Trichomonas vaginalis.
Trichomoniasis affects both women and
men, but symptoms are more common
in women. Most patients are treated
with an antibiotic called
metronidazole, which is very effective.

SYPHILIS
Syphilis is caused by a
bacterium and affects the mucus
membranes, genitalia, anus,
mouth, eyes, etc. painless sores
develop and can spread to other
parts and become more severe if
not treated.

Insanity, blindness, heart and kidney failure

and eventually death occurs after all the
organs have been invaded. Expectant
mothers are especially susceptible as the
disease is able to pass from mother to child
through the placenta. Syphillis can be
treated
with antibiotics such as penicillin.

GONORRHEA
Gonorrhea also caused by a bacterium.
Symptoms are similar in both men and
women.
Men

yellow discharge from penis,

burning sensation in the inflamed
urethra (so it hurts to pee).

Women

also have a yellow discharge,

but may be harder to detect as it mixes
with normal vaginal discharge.

If not treated early, the disease can

spread and infect the skin and joints.
It can also cause inflammation of the
uterus and cause sterility in both
men and women. A pregnant woman
cannot pass the disease during
pregnancy but may infect the child
during birth. Gonorrhea can also be
treated by antibiotics.

Bacterial infection
Pain during
urination

PUBIC LICE

Crab lice (also known as crabs or pubic

lice) are parasitic insects notorious for
infesting human pubic hair.
The species may also live on other areas
with hair, including the eyelashes. They
feed exclusively on blood.
Pubic lice usually infect a new host only by
close contact between individuals, usually
through sexual intercourse.
Parent-to-child infestations are more likely
to occur through routes of shared towels,

HERPES
Herpes caused by a virus. There are two
common herpes viruses, both of which give rise
to genital herpes.
Herpes Simplex type I causes the

development of cold sores around the lips

and mouths and can be transmitted by
kissing or sharing contaminated utensils

Herpes Simplex type II transmitted

sexually.

Persons infected with herpes endure repeated

episodes of painful blisters occur on the
genitals. These blisters rupture oozing pus and
may take up to two weeks each time to heal.
An infected person may have periods where
they are symptom free as the virus remains
dormant.

Infected women can pass the virus to their baby

during childbirth, causing irreparable damage
to the babys nervous system. Infected women
also have an increased risk of getting cervical
cancer. There is no cure for herpes once a
person is infected, they have it for life.

Painful blisters and

open sores on
genitals

CHLAMYDIA
Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted
infection caused by the bacterium
Chlamydia trachomatis. In women,
symptoms may include abnormal vaginal
discharge, burning during urination, and
bleeding in between periods, although
most women do not experience any
symptoms. Symptoms in men include pain
when urinating, and abnormal discharge
from their penis.

If left untreated in both men and women,

Chlamydia can infect the urinary tract and
potentially lead to pelvic inflammatory disease
(PID).
PID can cause serious problems during
pregnancy and even has the potential to cause
infertility. It can cause a woman to have a
potentially deadly ectopic pregnancy, in which
the child develops outside of the uterus.
However, Chlamydia can be cured with
antibiotics.

GENITAL WARTS

Genital warts is a highly contagious

sexually transmitted disease caused by
some sub-types of human papillomavirus
(HPV).
It is spread through direct skin-to-skin
contact during oral, genital or anal sex
with an infected partner.
Warts are the most easily recognized
symptom of genital HPV infection.
Genital warts often occur in clusters and
can be very tiny or can spread into large
masses in the genital or penis area

AIDS
Acquired Immune Deficiency
Syndrome (AIDS)
arguably the worst sexually
transmitted disease. It is caused
by the Human Immunodeficiency
Virus (HIV) which attacks the
immune system.

This condition progressively reduces the

effectiveness of the immune system and
leaves individuals susceptible to
opportunistic infections and tumors. HIV
is transmitted through direct contact of
a mucous membrane or the bloodstream
with a bodily fluid containing HIV, such
as blood, semen, vaginal fluid, preseminal fluid, and breast milk.

AIDS

Viral infection
Prevents the
immune system
from fighting off
infections.

Can you tell if someone

is infected with HIV or
AIDS just by looking at
them?

Prevention is better than

cure!!!
