WHAT IS
SCHEDULING ?
Scheduling refers to1.Determination of rate at which the work shall
be performed in order to its priority.
2.Determination of proper times when work will
be released to the plant
3.Determination of proper sequence

HISTORY
Designed by Mr. HENRY L
GANTT in 1990 to meet the
requirements of US army for
an improved method of
Planning & Controlling the

IMPORTANT POINTS
The critical path is the sequence of tasks from beginning to end that takes
the longest time to complete.
It is also the shortest possible time that the project can be finished in.
Any task on the critical path is called a critical task.
No critical task can have its duration changed without affecting the end
date of the project.

A PERT PROBLEM
20
21
Possible paths:
A,B,C,E,I = 2+3+1+4+3 = 13 days
A,B,D,F,I = 2+3+3+3+3 = 14 days
A,G,H,I = 2+2+5+3 = 12 days
ANSWER: A,B,D,F,I
22
TASKS C
Path C,E = 5 days, Path D,F = 6 days
Difference (slack) = 1 day for tasks C or E
compared to D,F
TASK G
Path B,C,E = 8 days. Path B, D, F = 9 days
Path G, H = 7 days.
So G or H have 2 days slack between them.
B,C or E have 1 days slack.
B,D,F have no slack.

for tasks D and F by one day each. How effective will this
reduction be in achieving his aim of maintaining the original
finish time for the project?
ESTIMATION OF
ACTIVITY TIME
In PERT, these three estimate times are derived for
each activity.
OPTIMISTIC TIME (to)
It is the shortest possible time in which an activity
can be completed.
MOST LIKELY TIME (tm)
It is the time in which the activity is normally
expected to complete under normal contingencies.
PESSIMISTIC TIME (tp)
It is the maximum time required to complete an
activity.
27
ESTIMATED TIME =
te = t o + (4 x t m) + t p
6
STANDARD DEVIATION=
S t = (t p - t o)/6
VARIANCE=
V t = [(t p - t o)/6] 2 = (S t) 2
28
If t o= 5, t m= 6 & t p= 7,then
Find-
1) Expected Time
2) Standard Deviation
3) Variance
ANSWER:
te = 6
S t = 1/6
V t = 1/36
