different types of methods that shifts the role of the instructors from givers of information to facilitating student learning. i) Active learning ii) Cooperative learning iii) Inductive teaching and learning
It focuses not only on what is learned but
Learner-centred learning is an active and
dynamic process through which learners develop deep understanding taking responsibilities of their own learning.
Gibbs (1992) offers a useful definition of
learner-centred learning. He states that learner-centred learning gives learners greater autonomy and control over choice of subject matter, learning methods and pace of study.
What is Discovery Learning
Approach ?
Introduced by Jerome Bruner (1960).
The basis is cognitive psychology.
An approach to instruction through which
students interact with their environment by exploring and manipulation of objects, asking questions or performing experiences (Omrod, 1995).
Discovery learning is an inquiry-based,
constructivist learning theory that takes place in problem solving situations where the learner draws on his or her own past experience and existing knowledge to discover facts and relationships and new truths to be learned.
Models that are based upon discovery
learning model include: guided discovery, problem-based learning, simulation-based learning, case-based learning, incidental learning, among others.
In discovery learning, students are active.
Learning is not defined as simply absorbing what is being said or read, but actively seeking new knowledge. Students are engaged in hands-on.(Mosca & Howard, 1997)
The focus in discovery learning is learning
how to analyze and interpret information to understand what is being learned rather than just giving the correct answer from rote memorization. Discovery learning pushes students to a deeper level of understanding. (Bonwell, 1998).
An essential part of discovery learning is the
opportunity for feedback in the learning process (Bonwell, 1998).
Student learning is enhanced, deepened, and
made more permanent by discussion of the topic with other learners (Schank & Cleary, 1994). Without the opportunity for feedback, learning is left incomplete.
Instead of students learning in isolation, as is
typical in the traditional classroom where silence is expected, students are encouraged to discuss their ideas to deepen their understanding
BENEFITS OF DISCOVERY LEARNING APPROACH
Helps to motivate students. Discovery learning allows learners to seek
