INTRODUCTION

International organisations have played


significant roles in the development of
international shipping
Currently there is a strong interface between
trade & shipping, hence organisations involved
not only regulate shipping but facilitate trade
development
Many organisations are under un umbrella eg.
IMO, ILO, UNCTAD, WTO
Others work closely with the un eg. BIMCO,
ICC, INTERTANKO & IACS

INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION
OF CLASSIFICATION SOCIETIES
An association representing the world major
classification societies
Founded in London in 1968
Main objectives are to promote the highest standard
in ship safety & prevention of marine pollution
Over 90% of world merchant tonnage is covered by
standard of IACS members
Members = ABS, BV, China Class Society, Croatian
Reg of Ship, DNV GL, Korean Reg of Ship, Indian
Register of Ship, LR, ClassNK (NKK), Registro Italiano
Navale, Poland Reg of Ship, Russian Maritime

WTO

There are a number of ways


of looking at the World
Trade Organization.
It is an organization for trade
opening.
It is a forum for governments to
negotiate trade agreements.
It is a place for them to settle
trade disputes.
It operates a system of trade
rules.
Essentially, the WTO is a place
where member governments
try to sort out the trade
problems they face with each
other.
