Beliefs

Social Factors Lay Beliefs

Mums own perceptions in prenatal care

Mostly, lay beliefs act in a positive way to pregnancy

Eg: Body massage is a necessity for most of the Malay

women after delivery and believed to be helpful on
recovery.5
Eg: Thought and music were believed to affect the
development of character of a baby

Social Factors Lay Beliefs

Possible conflicts between lay beliefs and proper medical
care
Eg: Malays believe that cravings of pregnant women must
be satisfied if its possible
Eg: Taking traditional herbs and western medicine at the
same time - Kacip Fatimah should be avoided due to its
detoxifying effect6

Conclusion
In summary
Pregnancy is not merely a physiological phenomenon
as it is heavily influenced by social factors.
Lifestyle will affect pregnancy directly, therefore
pregnant mum should always take precaution so that
it will not bring any adverse effect to pregnancy.

Conclusion

Family members, especially the Mums husband and

children that she comes in contact with everyday, can
cause different types of feelings in the Mum by
imposing their views on her.
Locality is where the pregnant mum comes in
contact with everyday and transportation shows how
well she can access the health care unit.
Lay beliefs indicate what a woman thinks she should
act for prenatal care and thus affects the pregnancy.
Doctors should play the role of educator to help
clarify Mums doubts.
