INTRODUCTION
OPERATING SYSTEM
An operating system is an integrated set of programs
that is used to manage the various resources
It is designed to support the activities of a computer
installation.
Its prime objective is to improve the performance and
efficiency of a computer system and increase facility, the
ease with which a system can be used.
it makes the computer system user friendly.

FUNCTIONS

Processor management i.e. different tasks being

performed by the computer system.
Memory management, that is, allocation of main
memory and other storage areas .
Input/output management, that is coordination
and assignment of different input and output
devices
Automatic transition from job to job as directed
by special control statements.
Maintenance of internal time clock and log of
system usage foe all users.

PROCESSING OF OPERATING
SYSTEM
Each of jobs are performed by one or more

computer programs and all the computer programs

and all the computer programs are jointly known as an
operating system.
one control program resides in the main memory
of the computer system .this is known as residential
program.
other programs are stored on the disk and are
called transient programs.
the control programs transfer these programs
in to the main memory and executes them as
and when they are needed.

The operating system tends to insolate the

hardware from the user.
The user communicates with the operating
system, supplies application programs and input
data and receives output results.

Types of operating system

Batch processing
Batch processing is the oldest method of running programs that
is still being employed by many data processing centres for
processing their jobs.i .in it each operator prepare his program
off line and submit it to the computer centre.

Spooling
The processing speed of a computer
system can be further increased
by a technique known as spooling.

Multiprogramming
to over come the problem of
underutilisation of main memory and CPU.

Multiprocessing
it is the simultaneous execution of two or
more processes by a computer system
having more then one CPU.

Time sharing
this term is used to describe a processing
system with a number of independent usable
stations like low speed,online.

CONCLUSION

operating system makes the computer user friendly.

it makes it easy for people to interface with computer.
operating system also perform variety of jobs.
The functions of operating system are transparent to the user.
User communicates with operating system supplies input data
and receives output result.
