Background of the study

In teaching learning process, students motivation is very essential.

Students motivation in learning English can be a good modal for
enhancing the teachers objectives in their class. According to
Michael Rost (2006, p.1) stated the research on motivation defines
motivation as an orientation toward a goal.
According to Hobbs (2003, p.249) proposes that a compliment is a
speech act which explicitly or implicitly bestows credit upon the
addressee for some possession, skill, characteristic, or the like, that
is positively evaluated by the speaker and addressee. In other case,
Ernawati (2004) states there are not many studies investigating
interlanguage compliments and compliment responses made by
learners of English as a second or foreign language. Hence, the
writer tries to make a research of male and female teachers way in
giving compliments and its impact to the students motivation.

Review of the literature

Holmes (2003, p.177) defines a compliment as a
speech act which explicitly or implicitly attributes
credit to someone other than the speaker; usually the
person addressed for some good (possession,
characteristic, skill, etc) which is positively valued by
the speaker and the hearer.
Passer & Smith (2008, p.364) Motivation is a process
that influences the direction, persistence, and vigor of
goal-directed behaviour.
Ryan and Deci (2000a, p. 55) defined intrinsic
motivation as doing something because it is
inherently interesting or enjoyable
Ryan and Deci (2000a, p. 60) Extrinsic motivation is
a construct that pertains whenever an activity is done
in order to attain some separable outcome

Fraenkel et al., (2012, p. 100), Purposive sampling
is different from convenience sampling in that
researchers do not simply study whoever is
available but rather use their judgement to select a
sample that they believe, based on prior
information.
The sample of this research was 8A, The class
consist of 24students (male and female students).
