INTRODUCTION
Soil reinforcement(soil stabilization) means the improvement of stability or
bearing capacity of the soil by the use of controlled compaction, proportioning
and/or the addition of suitable admixture or stabilisers.
Stabilization is the process of blending and mixing materials with a soil to
improve certain properties of the soil. Stabilization can be done with, cement,
lime, bitumen, flash.
Now we are using plastic as soil stabilizer.

TYPES OF SOIL STABILIZERS

Plastic
Lime Cement-Fly Ash (LCF)
Lime-Fly Ash (LF)
Portland Cement
Bitumen
Lime

PROPERTIES OF PLASTIC

Plastic have a numerous properties That make them

superior to other materials In many application
The difrent types of properties are Physical
properties,chemical properties

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES
Transparency
Flexibility
Elasticity
Water resistant
Electrical resistanc
Soft when hot

CHEMICAL PROPERTIES
Chemical resistance
Thermal resistance
Reactivity with water
Flammability
Heat of combustion

SOIL

Soil is defined as mineral particles produced by the physical or chemical

disintegration of racks.

Soil is also a parent rock. Soil is non homogeneous, and inorganic

Based on origin it can be classified as organic and inorganic

Damages due to swelling soil can be as following:

Rigorous structural damage

Cracks develop to basement floor area

Condemnation of building

Damage to pipelines and sewer lines too

All civil engineering structures are constructed on the soil. Many

times engineers encounters with poor or problematic soil like soft
soil, swelling soil etc. In old times engineers generally avoid
construction on such soil , but now a day due to limitation of land
we avoid such solution. Problematic soil can be cause of serious
damage of structures. So generally they are replaced by some
strong soil or they are treated for better engineering properties. The
techniques utilized for enhancement of the properties of those soils
are known as ground improvement techniques
Hence it become necessary to move forward with suitable methods

MAJOR SOIL DEPOSITS OF INDIA

The soil deposits of India may be classified in following five major groups
Alluvial soil
Black cotton soil
Lateritic soil
Desert soil
Marine deposits

Low bearing capacity soils

Black cotton soil :
Black cotton soils are clay of high plasticity. The soil
have high shrinkage and swelling characteristics
.the shearing strength of the soil is extremely low
the soil are highly compressible and have very low
bearing capacity

Marine deposits :-very low shearing strength and

highly compressible .they contain large amount of
organic matter. The soil is soft and highly plastic

POLYTHYLENE (PLASTIC) BAGS

Plastic Shopping Bag

The material density average 798kg/m3, with
the tensile strength ranging between 14 and
20 MPa.. bags of thickness 50 micron ,10mm
&15mm and lengths 20 mm,40 mm are adopt
and their reinforcement concentration in
0.15%, 0.30%, 0.45% & 0.60% by mass of soil
is used for soil reinforcement.

Plastic strips
Using a laser cutting machine, the plastic
material was sliced into strips of distinct
rectangular dimensions and mixed with
the soils for soil reinforcement.

WHY PLASTIC
Increased shear strength,
Tensile strength
Cheap
easily available

Durable

Not react with soil

PROCEDURE
Select the polyethylene bags of thickness 50 micron
Average density of 798kg/m3
Cut the polyethylene bags of length 20-,40 and with of 10-15
Check the bearing capacity of soil
The plastic strips of 0.15%, 0.30%, 0.45% & 0.60% by the weight of soil

Plastic strips changes the property of soil this strips make good bonding
between all soil particles and it make more bearing capacity and strength.
This is done by the properties of plastics ,
Conditions
Tensile strength ranging between 14 and 20
Thickness of plastic is 50 micron size
Strip 10mm &15mm and lengths 20 mm,40 mm,60 mm are adopt and
their reinforcement concentration in 0.15%, 0.30%, 0.45% & 0.60% by
mass of soil is used for soil reinforcement. The % is calculated by the level
of bearing capacity of soil

CONCLUSIONS
The efect of plastic waste pieces on soil is influenced by various
factors such as soil type and plastic waste content.
The plastic waste helps to increase the bearing capacity of soil
The variation of the friction angle of clayey soil with percentage
of plastic content is a nonlinear variation and similar trend is
found in sandy soil.
The plastic pieces decrease the maximum dry unit weight of the
soil and optimum moisture content. The variation of optimum
water content and maximum dry unit
