Placenta

Previa
• is an abnormal low implantation of
the placenta in proximity to the
internal cervical os.

• is a condition in which the


placenta attaches to the uterine
wall in the lower portion of the
uterus and covers all or parts of
the internal cervix.
Classification of Placenta
Previa
Marginal Previa
this is a condition
in which the edge
of the placenta lies
at the margin of
the internal
cervical os and may
be exposed during
dilatation
Partial Previa
this is a condition
when the placenta
covers the cervical
opening, but not
completely. In this
case, the baby must
be delivered via
cesarian section
Complete Previa
when the placenta completely covers
the internal cervical os. This is the
most severe type
of placenta previa
and requires a
cesarian delivery

Episodic painless bright
red vaginal bleeding in
the late second trimester

 Fluid volume deficit

blood loss secondary
to disrupted
placental
implantation
Intervention &
Collaborative Care
• ultrasound exams
• no vaginal examination
• double set-up procedure if indicated by the
physician
• with a small first bleed, patient may be home
for complete bed rest
• monitor maternal v/s & fetal well-being
• assess blood loss by weighing peripads or bed
pads that are bloody
• monitor serial hemoglobin & hematocrit levels
• steroids shot may be given to help mature the
baby’s lungs
