CLAY PAVER
BLOCKS

MANUFACTURING
Clay pavers are manufactured
using three basic methods:
PROCESS
1. Extrusion,
2. Molding,
3. Dry pressing.
These pavers can be square edged, antique, beveled, and tumbled
The majority of all clay pavers are made using an extrusion process. In this
manufacturing procedure, clay is combined with water and pressed into a high-pressure
vacuum The pavers are then dried and fired in a kiln to complete the manufacturing
process. Extruded pavers are usually a very durable paving material.
Molded pavers are formed by pressing a clay and water mixture into a wooden mold lined
with sand. Different colored sand is used to line the mold and color the pavers. After the
molding process is complete, the clay pavers are dried and fired in a kiln. The process
used to manufacture these pavers gives them an antique appearance.

Dry pressed pavers are manufactured by placing almost dry clay into a
pressurized steel mold. Air is extracted from the clay during the molding
process to increase its density. After the clay has been molded, it is dried and
fired in a kiln. The lack of moisture in dry pressed clay pavers makes them
less vulnerable to shrinkage than other types.

The paving-blocks are composed of a

composition of fire-clay or other refractory or
vitrifiable material, such as sand and alkaline
salts or flint and alkalies, which are formed
by molds in a plastic condition'into a hollow
or chambered body.

USES
Clay pavers are used mainly
in patio, walkways,
driveways.

TERRACOTTA
TILES

TERRACOTTA

It is a low temperature, red burning, porous and

aesthetically appealing earthenware.
In the manufacturing center- the common red
clay, which is the most abundantly available
mineral on earth is processed.
Its high plasticity and workability in wet
condition enables to shape the same into any
form.
It is then let to dry.
It is then fried in a kiln at a temperature of 8501000 degree Celsius using LPG which keep
the terra cotta tile under uniform colour,
strength and finish.

General size of these tiles are 300x300x12xmm thickness and 230x230x12mm

thickness.
The refined terracotta acquires red colour, strength and porosity that last for more
than a lifetime.
Later it is used for decorative roofing, ceiling and flooring tiles as well as wall
cladding and building blocks.
The price of tile range from Rs 50 Rs 2000 per sq ft.

QUARRY
TILES

Constitutens: It is made by the extrusion process from natural clay or shales

Sizes: Usually these tiles are inch to inch thick
The common sizes available are
6x 6x
4x 8x
8x 8x
Manufacturing process : It is Manufactured from a mixture of natural ingredients such
as clay or shale and hard fired in kilns at high temperatures exceeding 2000 degree
Fahrenheit. They are then extruded through a die and cut. Once extruded, the tiles are
sent through a drier and fired in a kiln.
Properties of quarry tiles: It is a dense body.
It ia low in porosity and high in strength.
It is non inflammable
Its co-efficienct of friction is :
Wet: > 0.60
Dry: > 0.80

Uses: Quarry tile is extensively used for floors. It can be used either indoors or outdoors.
Since it is freeze-resistant this tile should be used outdoors in climates
where freeze-thaw action occurs. Most commercial kitchens, pavement, etc
uses quarry tile to be used because of its slip resistant and non
porous properties.
Shapes: Rectangular ,square, octagonal and hexagonal.
Prices: It ranges from rs60 to rs250 per sq feet.

PATIO
TILES

The most commonly used patio tiles are made

of unglazed clay. The better fired it is the
harder and more dense the result. Red clay is
the most common and others of similar
character may be made of white, gray and
black clay.
Price per sq. meter ranges from Rs. 120 Rs.
300.
Why clay tiles are used:1.
Naturally occurring material
2.
Fire Resistant
3.
They are permeable, so resists slipping.
4.
Strong

Clay tiles (also Mangalorean tiles) are a type of tiles native to the city of Mangalore, India. The
tiles were first introduced to India in 1860 by a German missionary. Since then the industry
flourished in India. These red tiles, prepared from hard laterite clay.
QUALITY AND USAGE
They provide excellent ventilation especially during summer and aesthetically as well.
Some of them are especially made to be placed over kitchen and bathroom for the
smoke to escape.
These red colored clay tiles, unique in shape and size are so famous and export to all
the corners of world.
They are unique and are made or available in different size and shapes depending on
the users need.
These tiles are cheap, durable and costs only one third that of cement.
These tiles are suited for regions experiencing heavy rainfall as water drains easily and
fast.

PROPERTIES

The Mangalore tiles are generally placed at

forty five degree slant.
The tiles get their robust red colour due to the
high proportion of iron compound found in the
laterite clay.
A tile weighs about 2 kilograms (4.4 lb) to 3
kilograms.

PREPARATION
First part is to collect enough clay and place it in a
mold and is cut to exact measurement. Then that
rectangular piece of clay with exact length and
thickness is placed on another machine which puts
the factory logo and shapes it into a tile. Then with
hand any extra clay is removed and sent to be
carried for firing and later glazing. Once fired and
glazed it is ready and is stored for shipping.
