POPULATION
The term population is referred to by sociologists as the number
of persons occupying a certain geographic habitat, drawing
subsistence from that habitat, and interacting with one another.
It is also defined as the total number of individuals constituting
a given group, such as the number of persons living in the
nation, state, country, or community.

POPULATION
Population is determined by taking a census, a count
of all the people. Many countries take censuses at
regular intervals. In our country census is done every
10 years.

DEMOGRAPHY
-comes from the Greek word demos which means
people.
Demography is the science or study of population,
concerned particularly with the rate of population
change and the causes of such change. It involves the
study of moral, intellectual, physical, physiological, and
economic factors affecting births, marriage and
mortality.

IBN KHALDUN (1332-1406)

Regarded
as
Father
of
Demography for his economic
analysis of social organization which
produce the first scientific and
theoretical work on population,
development and group dynamics.

THEORIES ON POPULATION GROWTH

AND DECLINE
MALTHUSIAN THEORY
Thomas
Malthus
(1766-1834)
theorized
pessimistically that population was uncontrollable
and that it would, at a future date, reach and then
exceed a level at which the planet could sustain
the incredible high population numbers.
Population increase more faster than the food
supplies.
There will be overpopulation and massive poverty.

THEORIES ON POPULATION GROWTH

AND DECLINE
MARXIAN THEORY
Karl Marx believed
that
population could ultimately be
controlled by the complex
workings of market economics
and that the economic markets,
as they expanded, would be
able to sustain population at
whatever level it had reached.

DEMOGRAPHERS
According to Petersen, demographers are the people
who gather data about the size, distribution,
composition, and change in population in order to
describe them.

FUNCTIONS OF DEMOGRAPHY
1. To ascertain the number of people in a given area.
2. To determine what changes, growth or decline this
number represents and explain the cause/s of the
change.
3. To categorize people in the basis of the characteristics
like age, sex, marital status, occupation, income,
nationality, race ethnic group and other
characteristics.
4. To ascertain the distribution of people among different
countries and regions, both rural and urban.

DEMOGRAPHIC DATA
Demographics are the quantifiable statistics of a given
population.
SOURCES:
1. Population Census
2. Vital Registration Statistics System
3. Sample or special surveys
4. Demographic data gathered and processed by
government agencies.

CAUSES OF RAPID POPULATION

GROWTH
1. Sustained Fertility
Certain Filipino customs, traditions, and beliefs
contribute to the high population growth rate. Having a
large family is traditional to us.
Few people are motivated to limit their family size.
The known effects of some contraceptives have
discouraged many negative couples from using them.

CAUSES OF RAPID POPULATION

GROWTH
1. Sustained Fertility
.Early marriage.
.The permissive atmosphere which is conducive to
pre-marital sexual relationship.

CAUSES OF RAPID POPULATION GROWTH

2. Decline in Mortality due to the
following:
Advances in science and technology
Intensified nutrition or diet
Sanitation

CAUSES OF RAPID POPULATION GROWTH

3. Immigration.
In general, the Philippine Population features are as
follows:
More than 50% of our population are children who are
sixteen years of age and below so that these portions
of our population are all depending upon the adults for
support.

CAUSES OF RAPID POPULATION GROWTH

3. Immigration.
More than one-half of our population is engaged in
agriculture, which means that most of our people live by
tilling the lands.
Death rate is higher with the males who are always
outside the house to earn a living for the family.

SOME CHARACTERISTICS OF POPULATION

1. Age Structure refers to the people at a different age levels
2. Sex Composition refers to how the total population is
composed in terms of being males or females
3. Dependency Ratio refers to the proportion of 0-4 and the
65-over age levels per one hundred person aged 15-64.
4. Population Density refers to the number of persons that
can be equally and statistically distributed
5. Population Explosion refers to the remarkable increase in
population brought about by a stubbornly high birth rate and a
declining death rate.

MEASURES AND PROGRAMS ON

POPULATION CONTROL
1. Adoption of planned parenthood or family planning
2. Dissemination information on family planning through
government agencies and even private institution.
3. Re-educating the people concerning their beliefs and practices
which favor big family size.
4. Artificial birth controls.
5. Encouragement of delayed marriages and control of births
within marriage.
