The Cage of Guilt

Reconditioning our
conditioned responses
with Saint Peter
Success Stories
• The Apostle Peter was
greatly used of God
despite his many
mistakes.
• Peter was a man who
was passionate and
hot-headed which
worked against him
sometime.
• Read Luke 22:31-34
I didn’t do it

• Conditioned responses keep us trapped in guilt.

• We develop all kinds of responses in our lives from the nervous laugh
and half smile to saying “I didn’t do it” or “nothing…”
• One Jesus’ main focus was breaking these response like when he
says, “You have heard it said… But I tell you…”
• Sometimes guilt can be good if it comes from the Holy Spirit to
convict us and make us change our ways. But we are going to talk
about the one from the world.
How Peter Got in the Cage
• Read Luke 22:54-62
• So after Peter denied
Jesus once you would
think he would
remember what Jesus
said.
• Then you would think
he would remember the
second time.
• But its not until the
rooster crowed did he
remember.
Remembering the Rooster
• All of us had noticed how a
sound or smell can bring
back a memory.
• Now imagine being Peter
and in ancient Judea and
everyday he would wake up
to a rooster crow.
• In Peter’s mind he must be
saying “Hey Peter,
remember when you denied
Christ the man you loved!
Ok, well if you didn’t…”
• But Jesus came to break us
free from guilt and allow us
to live for the great cause
he always planned for us.
Keeping that Eye contact

• In verse 61 after Peter denied Jesus three times it says

“And the Lord looked upon Peter.”
• When we do wrong and someone knows it and gives us
eye contact it convicts us but I think Jesus did this to
assure Peter that they were still good.
• Its like Jesus wanted to tell peter I forgave you and want
you even though you did wrong towards me.
• What would you think if your best friend would have
turned their back on you when you needed them the
most? Would you then trust them to take care of your
Kingdom the one you died for?
The Show Room
• I remember the room in my
house growing up where all the
nice porcelain and glass things
that we never could plain in.
• One day I picked up one of
these glass figures and dropped
it.
• I knew I should not have played
with it and I deserved judgment.
• Yet my mom cleaned it up,
smiled and said nothing.
Parent’s Love
• See sometimes a parent needs to discipline us yet other
times they show us love when we least expect or deserve it.
• Grace in a moment like that is something we don’t forget.
• It is saying to us that you are more valuable than the
damage you have done.
• Just as God proved His own love for us in that while we were
yet sinners Christ died for us. (Romans 5:8)
• Jesus does not wait for us to get our act together. He did
his best while we were at our worst.
Feed My Sheep
• In John 21 after Jesus
rose from the dead
Peter went out to go
fishing.
• But he didn’t go back to
being a fisher because
of what Jesus said in
John 21:15-17.
• “If we confess our sins,
He is faithful and just to
forgive our sins, and to
cleanse us from all
unrighteousness.” (1
John 1:9)
