GREEK ROMAN

Greek Roman
ARCHITECTURE

Doric Style - is rather sturdy

and its top (the capital), is
plain. This style was used in
mainland Greece and the
colonies in southern Italy
and Sicily.

The Parthenon is the most

important surviving building
ofClassical Greece. It is a
temple dedicated to
thegoddess Athena, whom
the people of Athens
considered their patron.

Greek Roman
ARCHITECTURE

Ionic Style - is thinner

and more elegant. Its
capital is decorated with
a scroll-like design (a
volute)
Erechtheum is built on
the Acropolis of Athens
between 421 and
405BC. It contained
sanctuaries to Athena
Polias, Poseidon, and
Erechtheus.

Greek Roman
ARCHITECTURE

Corinthian Style - is seldom

used in the Greek world,
but often seen on Roman
temples. Its capital is very
elaborate and decorated
with acanthus leaves.
Temple of Apollo Epicurius
(Corinthian Order) was
used on the exterior of the
Choragic Monument of
Lysicrates in Athens, and
later on a huge scale at the
Temple of the Olympian
Zeus, Athens.

Greek Roman
PAINTINGS

The First Style (ca. 20060 B.C.) was largely an

exploration of simulating marble of various
colors and types on painted plaster.
The Second Style (03.14.13a-g) in Roman wall
painting emerged in the early first century B.C.,
during which time fresco artists imitated
architectural forms purely by pictorial means. In
place of stucco architectural details, they used
flat plaster on which projection and recession
were suggested entirely by shading and
perspective; as the style progressed, forms grew
more complex.

Greek Roman
PAINTINGS

The Third Style (ca. 20 B.C. 20 A.D.), which

coincided with Augustus' reign, rejected illusion
in favor of surface ornamentation. Wall paintings
from this period typically comprise a single
monochrome backgroundsuch as red, black, or
whitewith elaborate architectural and vegetal
details.
The Fourth Style in Roman wall painting (ca.
2079) is generally less disciplined than its
predecessor. It revives large-scale narrative
painting and panoramic vistas, while retaining
the architectural details of the Third Style.

Pompeian Painter with Painted

Statue and Framed Painting
Pompeii - This image of a painter
shows both a framed painting
and a painted statue. Since the
framed painting is complete, it is
unclear why it is held by the boy.
It is too far away to be easily
accessible and too dissimilar
from the statue to be its model.
The framed painting seems to be
made of glass, as the
background shines through. Note
that a picture frame has been
painted around the fresco itself.
It is now located at Museo
Archeologico in Naples.

Greek Roman
PAINTINGS

Severan Tondo - is one of the

few preserved examples
ofpanel painting (tempera or
encaustic painting on wooden
panels)fromClassical Antiquity.
It is atemperaor egg-based
painting on a circular wooden
panel (Tondo). At present, it is
on display at
theAntikensammlung Berlin. It
depicts a very routine official
portrait from some provincial
government office, and the
well-known Fayum mummy
portraits, all from Roman Egypt,
and almost certainly not of the
highest contemporary quality.

celebrated extant

many such grave
decorations in the
Greek colonies in
Italy.It is located at

Athena Parthenos ("Athena

the Virgin") is the title of a
massive chryselephantine
(gold and ivory) sculpture
of the Greek goddess
Athena, made by Phidias
and his assistants and
housed in the Parthenon in
Athens. Its epithet was an
essential character of the
goddess herself. A number
of replicas and works
inspired by it, both ancient
and modern, have been
made.

Gothic
Architecture
The people of Rouen, in northern
France, decided to build
themselves a new cathedral in
1200 AD.
Unlike these other cathedrals,
though, it took more than three
hundred years to finish Rouen
cathedral, so that they didn't finish
the front, or facade, until 1530 AD
(and they never did finish one of
the towers). That's why Rouen's
facade looks so much lacier and
fancier than the other facades.

Gothic
Architecture
1160 AD, the Bishop of Paris,
Maurice de Sully, decided that
Paris should also have a big
new Christian church. Paris
needed a church in the
new Gothic style, not the old
church that had been on that spot
since the time of Charlemagne.
They built the facade, or front, of
the new church in three levels,
which was the
old Romanesque style, but with
pointed arches in the new Gothic
style.

Gothic
Architecture
This is the castle that William the
Conqueror built before he left to
conquer England, to defend his
own territory in Normandy, in
France. William built this castle
around 1050 AD.
Like other medieval castles, the
Caen castle had a moat around it.
The moat was very deep so that
enemies could not batter down the
walls on the other side. If they
climbed down into the moat, it
would be easy to shoot them with
arrows or drop rocks on them to kill
them.
