Physics
1.The graph below shows how the position of a steel ball
which is has been projected horinzontally from P changes
with time. The position of the ball is shown at constant
time interval

1)Explain how the horizontal motion of the ball

shows that air resistance is negligible.
~Horizontal distance of the steel ball in time interval is constant.
~Horizontal velocity of the steel ball is constant.
~Acceleration of the steel ball is zero.
~From :

~Final horizontal velocity of the steel ball is equal to the initial

horizontal velocity of the steel ball .
~Gravity force does not affect or does not make any change in the
horizontal velocity component of the velocity.
~Thus , air resistance is negligible in the horinzontal motion of the ball.

b)Explain the vertical motion of the ball :

~ Vertical component of the velocity of the steel ball is
not constant during the projectile motion.
~Force of gravity, g ( 9.81ms^-2) acts on the steel ball
and changes the vertical component of the velocity of the
steel ball
~The vertical component of the velocity of the steel ball
increases with time.
~The vertical displacement travelled by the steel ball
increases with time.

air resistance were not negligible, describe how this would aff
he horizontal displacement of the ball
~ The horizontal component of the velocity of the ball
will decrease due to the air resistance.
~The air resistance, also known as air drag, apposes the
motion of the ball.
~The horizontal displacement of the ball in a constant
time interval thus decreases.

ii) The vertical motion of the ball :

~The vertical component of the velocity of the ball will
decrease due to the air resistance.
~The air resistance, also known as air drag, apposes the
motion of the ball.
~The time of flight of the ball increases.
~The gravitational acceleration, g of the ball is not
constant due to the air resistance.

An object on the floor is pushed by a force
to the left of the object. The magnitude of
the force is 40N and its angle is 30 from
horizontal. At the same time the frictional
force exerted on the object is 10N.By using
resolving vector method calculate the
resultant force exerted on the object.

b)State the principle of linear momentum.

When the net external force acting on a system is zero

( isolated system) , the total momentum of that system is
constant (conserved).

A steel ball with mass 40.0g is

dropped from a height of 2.00m
onto a horizontal steel slab.The
ball rebounds to a height of 1.60m
(i) Calculate the impulse delivered
to the ball during impact.
