A over IP Introduction :
interface u-plane types:

A-

PCM over TDM (PT):

Legacy A-interface
Transcoder is located in BSS (or NSN proprietary solution TRAU is in MGW)
Circuit pools and CIC in A-interface

PCM over IP (PI):

PCM over IP means that either G.711 (a-law or -law) coding is used for speech
or Clearmode (rfc4040 transparent 64 kbit/s connection) is used for CS Data/Fax
and HSCSD in A-interface
Compressed codecs with TFO are possible
Transcoder is located in BSS
No circuit pools, no CIC in A-interface, Call identifier is used

Full IP (FI)
Full IP means that compressed codecs are used in A-interface over IP with TrFO,
no G.711 support
Transcoder is located in MGW
CS Data/Fax and HSCSD are not supported in S15
Available only with Packet Abis in S15
No circuit pools, no CIC in A-interface, Call identifier is used

Two new functional units:
ETPA for AoIP with TC in MGW solution
ETPA is gateway for RTP packets between ETPE/T & BTS and MGW
ETPA makes bicasting, when relevant
ETPC for AoIP with TC in BSS solution
ETPC converts Clearmode, PCMA or PCMU RTP packets to/from PCM/TSL
between ETPC and TR3x
Compensate PDVs (using jitter buffer)

Connections
Ater16 kbit/s submultiplexing connections between TCSM3i and BSC

(speech)
64 kbit/s connections between TCSM3i/TR3x and ETPC
Fixed mapping between PCM/TSL/subTSL of GSWB and ETPC A-interface
TLA (IP address and UDP port)
HSCSD requires circuit pools to be defined to Ater for multislot cases: two
and four slot pools
TLA of ETPC/ETPA and MGW termination points are negotiated per call
between MSC and BSS using BSSAP signalling and using ETPSIG_c
protocol between BCSU and ETPC/ETPA.

ETPSIG_c provides messages for control of ETPC and ETPA units.

ETPSIG_m provides O&M connection between ETPA and ETPC units.

In ETPC case ETPSIG_m connection is only to master BSC

TrFO vs. TFO

Transcoder Free Operation (TrFO)
-Possible only with FI AoIP case
- Codec and AMR codec configuration is
negotiated with MSS using Out of Band
(OoB) signalling before call path is
connected.
-Only compressed codecs are used.
-Call is started with negotiated codec
(note! TrFO is not always possible, but
BSS is not aware of that)
-TrFO is mandatory for end to end AMRWB call in FI cases.
- In codec change cases codec is
negotiated using TrFO OoB signalling.
-Note: transcoder is used (MGW can do
also TFO TrFO interworking)
-RTP packets are used

Nokia Siemens Networks

Presentation / Author / Date

Tandem Free Operation (TFO)

-Possible only with PI and PT AoIP cases
-Codec and AMR codec configuration
negotiated using Inband signalling after
call path is connected. TFO frames are
used between TRAUs.
-Compressed codecs are used in TFO
connection (two bits are stolen for TFO
from G.711 samples in A-interface)
-TFO is mandatory for end to end AMRWB call in PI and PT cases.
- In codec change cases codec is
negotiated using TFO Inband signalling.
-Transcoder is used
-TRAU frames used between BSC-TRAU
-TFO frames used between TRAU-TRAU

AoIP TC in BSS, TFO

-MGW has also possible for TFO - TrFO interworking
so that e.g. RAN can use TrFO and BSS TFO with the
same or compatible compressed codec and
configuration

Bi-casting
In bicasting same call data is sent in DL to both source and

target BTS air interface during HO.

MS will change smoothly from source to target BTS in DL
direction.
AoIP TC in MGW bicasting is done either in MGW or in ETPA
AoIP TC in BSS bicasting switching is done as in legacy cases
in GSWB

Call Identifier IE
The Call Identifier information element is a value defined on a per MSC
basis by which a call in the MSC and the BSS could be identified. The Call
Identifier shall not be changed as long as an IP interface is used and the
call is served by the same MSC and the same SCCP connection. The Call
Identifier information element is included if the core network supports an IP
based User Plane interface.
The Call Identifier is a logical concept. It is used to identify an IP based call
in control plane.
Call Identifier shall only be allocated by MSC.
