SHOT PEENING
Is a Cold Working
Process in which the
surface of the part is
bombarded with small
spherical media called
shot.

Ceramic has
a longer life
than glass

not leave

STEEL)
Stainless Steel
Cut wire shot is
used where iron
contamination is
of concern and a
hard shot is
required
Glass is used
for lower
intensities,
delicate parts
or in areas that
have small or
sharp radii
(such as
threads). Also,

where iron
contamination
is of concern
SHOT HARDNESS
Hardness of the shot will influence the amount
and depth of compressive stress.
The peening media should always be at least as
hard or harder than the material being peened.
Cast Steel Shot is manufactured in two
hardness ranges:
Hard Shot
is RC55-62
Regular Shot
is RC45-52
SHOT SIZE
Shot size is the nominal diameter of the shot.
For Cast Steel and Glass beads it is expressed in
ten-thousandths of an inch.
Ex: S330 shot has a nominal diameter of .0330"
For Cut Wire it is expressed in thousandths of an
inch.
Ex:
CW41 has a nominal diameter of .041"

INTENSITY
It is basically a function
of the mass and
velocity of the shot and
its angle in relation to
the surface
being peened.

COVERAGE
Coverage is the extent of peening
indentations present on the surface
being peened.
100% coverage is reached when the
original surface of the material is
obliterated entirely by
overlapping peening dimples.
COVERAGE VERIFICATION
(INSPECTION)
Can be verified by the use of a ten power
(10X) magnifying glass or by the peen
scan process.
The peen scan process uses fluorescent
dye and a black light. Fluorescent dye is
applied to the part prior to peening and then
is inspected after peening to verify all dye is
removed indicating 100% coverage.
