Heritage Tourism

Heritage or Culture?

- culture is defined as the behaviors and

beliefs of a particular social, ethnic, or age
group, as well as the ways of living built up
by a group, from one generation to
another.

What is Heritage?
Heritage is anything that is considered
important enough to be passed on to the
future generations.
Something that comes or belongs to one
by reason of birth.
Something which is inherited from one's
ancestors.

In simple terms..
Heritage is what we inherit.
It
includes
customs,
language
and
values.
Culture is what we live. It
includes
following
our
heritage and the day to day
living of our country or
locale. Culture evolves and
changes, but our heritage is
what came before.

Categories of Heritage

Natural Heritage refers to the natural
aspects like the fauna and flora,

Understanding the
Significance of Cultural
Heritage

There are 4 main aspects to understand

the significance of cultural heritage sites.
These aspects help to determine the
management policies and procedure
pursuant to the particular site. Thus It is
very important to understand and
determine
the
significances
before
embarking on a heritage project.

The 4 Main aspects are:

1. Historical Significances
The age or relationship to historical era,
person or event. Historical significance is a
relatively easy and over bearing trait in heritage
management.
The biggest bell in
Asia, which weighs
10.4
tons
or
23,000 lbs. casted
by Juan Reina in
about 1884, using
sacks of coin given
by the people of
the town.

The 4 Main aspects are:

2. Social Significances
Social Significance is hard to ascertain. It
refers to the social, spiritual and other community
oriented values attributed to a place. This maybe
because the place has existed to serve a certain
important role in the society for a period of time.

The 4 Main aspects are:

3. Aesthetic Significance refers to this special sense
of importance of a place. This could be in terms of
architecture, scale or even the designs seen on
the place.

4. Scientific Significance refers to the scope or
possibility of scientific findings from a site,
monument or place. Here the importance lies
more in the information that may yield out of
understanding and researching the place or site.
This can mostly be attributed to archaeological
sites or ancient monuments.
e.g: Tabon Cave in Palawan

The artifacts recovered belong to different

periods ranging from 50,000 years ago to
the 14th century A.D. The most celebrated
archaeological find is the Tabon Man, one of
the oldest known human skeletal remains in
the Philippines dating back to 16,500 years
(14,000 B.C.). The oldest human fossil so far
recovered from the Tabon Cave, however, is
a tibia (bone of the lower leg) that dates
back to 47,000 years (45,000 B.C.).
