PARTS OF THE SYSTEM UNIT

1. MOTHERBOARD
Allows all the parts of a computer system to
communicate with one another.
Components of a MOBO :
a. Socket

- It determines what kind of

MICROPROCESSOR or CPU the MOBO uses.

b. Chipset

- A logic system of the MOBO and is

usually made of two parts the
NORTHBRIDGE and the SOUTHBRIDGE.

c. Slots and Ports

- Used for putting additional

components and other peripheral
devices to be connected in the system.

Common Slots & Ports in MOBO

PCI or PCI-E - Peripheral Component Interconnect or Peripheral
Component Interconnect Express

- Integrated Drive Electronics

IDE
- Serial Advanced Technology Attachment
SATA
- Universal Serial Bus
USB
- Double In-line Memory Module
DIMM
- Personal System / 2
PS/2
- Video Graphics Array
VGA
NIC / LAN - Network Interface Card/Local Area Network

Parallel Port - Is a 25-pin, D-shaped female port used to attach a

printer, scanner, or other parallel devices.

Serial Port

- Used to be the home of the mouse or older

digital devices.

Parts of a Motherboard
d. BIOS

- Stands for Basic Input/Output System

which controls the basic function of the
computer system and performs a self-check
every time the computer is turned on.

e. Connectors & Jumpers

- Are used for making configurations

and settings in a motherboard.

PARTS OF THE SYSTEM UNIT

2. PROCESSOR (CPU)
A component that carries out theinstructions of
acomputer program to perform the basic
arithmetic, logic and input/outputoperations of
the system.
INTEL vs AMD

PARTS OF THE SYSTEM UNIT

3. MEMORY (RAM)

A part of the computer system that holds data

momentarily for rapid retrieval.

PARTS OF THE SYSTEM UNIT

4. HARD-DISK DRIVE (HDD)

A high-capacity, self-contained storage device

containing a read-write mechanism.

PARTS OF THE SYSTEM UNIT

5. OPTICAL DISK DRIVES (DVD-ROM/BLU-RAY)

Is adisk drivethat useslaser light or

electromagnetic waves within or near thevisible
light spectrumas part of the process of reading
or writing data to or fromoptical discs.

PARTS OF THE SYSTEM UNIT

6. EXPANSION CARDS
Is aprinted circuit boardthat can be inserted into
an expansion slotof amotherboardto add
functionality to a computer system.

PARTS OF THE SYSTEM UNIT

7. POWER SUPPLY UNIT (PSU)
An electronic module that converts high voltage
(110 - 240 VAC)alternating current electricity into
smootheddirect currentat the various different
voltages required by themotherboard.

PARTS OF THE SYSTEM UNIT

A bus is a circuit
(pathway) that
connects one
part of the
motherboard to
another.
