1. Introduction
The Promethean Interactive ActivBoard
It is an interactive board that has several advantages over normal
white board. It provides several attractive features like:
Multi color pen
Dry erase surface
A very easy to use software

Utility
White Board
Used for writing and erasing just as you would do on a normal board, just with
added sophistication.

Extremely useful in teaching computer related applications e.g. MSExcel, MS-Word, Photoshop and others

1. Introduction
Features
The projector and board heights are adjustable so that we can fix
the right height of board according to our needs. Any
discrepancy related to the projection not completely being
displayed can be adjusted manually to focus the projection
exactly the way we want
The ActivPen is very interactive and easy to use

Advantages
The entire text could be saved on the computer in pdf format so
that students do not have to waste their energies jotting down
points and instead could concentrate on the lecture.

2. Setting up the smartboard

There are 3 wires that are connected to the smartboard
2 black cables: The main power cable
The video cable connected to the CPU

Other is a white video cable for the laptop

3. Starting the system

Set up the cable to the device and the source
Use the remote of the projector to
power on the board
selecting the source

4. Calibrating the Active Pen

After the smartboard is on, we have to ensure the
smartpen is calibrated
To initiate the calibration screen,Hoverthe pen above
the flame in the upper left corner of the board for 3-5
seconds.

 Follow the onscreen directions which includes

Following aseries of 5 crosses (quick calibration) that
appear on screen.
Touching the stylus to the centre of each cross to
calibrate

 The pen tip will now be aligned after calibration

In case the flame icon on the top right doesn't work,
follow these steps
Select the triangle on the bottom right of the taskbar of a
PC
Select the Promethean icon PC
Select calibration from the menu. Then select 5 points

5. Using Activinspire
Activinspire is a learning and teaching tool from
Promethean for smart boards
With Activinspire you can teach as a traditional
chalkboard, write draw and erase as one normally would
Save the presentation as a flipboard or in different
formats
Add pictures from existing sources or the internet to the
presentation

5.1Starting Activinspire
To launch Activinspire double click on the

icon on

the desktop or in
Start>Programs>Promethean>Activinspire
Once the application launches the following window
would appear

 To create a flipboard which is a blank board select

If you wish to open an existing flipchart i.e., any
previous presentation select
From the folder choose the flipboard which you want to
open to continue with the presentation

5.2The Activinspire window

the Activinspire software is
present in the right hand
side of the Activinspire

5.4Using the pen

The pen is the drawing or annotating tool
To select the pen tool tap on the pen icon on the toolbar
or use the shortcut Ctrl + P on the keyboard
To write or draw, just use ActivPen on the smartboard as
you would use a chalk on a chalkboard
The text would appear as shown here

5.4.1 Changing the ink colour

You can also change the colour of the ink for the pen
The change the ink colour tap on the required colour
from the colour palette box
Once you have chosen a colour ex. Blue, you can
continue writing or drawing with the pen

5.5Using ActivPen
Left Click

Right Click
Hold the right button

touch the screen at the

to use the right click

5.6Adding pages
To add a fresh page or go to the next page tap on the
next page icon
By selecting

a new page is added if the current page

is the last page else it goes to the next page

 To go to the previous page tap on the

icon

You can edit or modify or view any of your previous

pages

5.7Using the Eraser

If you wish to clear the sketch on flipchart
Use the eraser icon on the toolbar or use Ctrl + E for shortcut
Just tap on the icon
Select the width to be erased, then rub gently over the
annotation

5.8Saving Flipchart as PDF

It is easily done in following 5 steps:
1. Click on the File tab in upper left corner
2. Then click on the Print and new dialogue box opens
3.

Click on the Export from PDF button

4. Save the file to the desired location as the pdf format

5. The file is ready for sharing

6. Troubleshooting
Some of the issues that you could face are:
Licence request at start
If there is a dialog box at start requesting for the activation of
the product then select on the acceptance of terms checkbox
and then click on Continue Trial

If the text or drawing is not appearing at the place you

have placed the Activ Pen
Recalibrate using the step as explained in chapter 4
