Basics
CAN Network
CAN (Controller Area Network)
A CAN network is a system in where messages are
broadcasted about the network
Simplifies Wiring
The Skid Steer Loaders use a 2 wire bus CAN High and
CAN Low (Difference is Inverted Signal)
Messages are composed of Bits (binary code)
Similar to how a telephone system is set up
A Message is broadcasted from Point A to Point B

General
When troubleshooting look for 60 Ohms of
resistance between CAN high and CAN low
when both resistors are plugged in, an infinite
reading could indicate a component unplugged
or a break in the bus.
Look for 120 Ohms if one of the two resistors is
unplugged and your measuring across the bus
and if there is a break or something is
unplugged the meter will read infinite.
The CAN system can be checked on the
diagnostic connector.
Resistance checks must be done with the power

Review Questions
When checking the CAN bus, what Ohm reading would
ensure that the bus is good?
Where on the machine can a technician check the CAN
bus?
What is the difference between a relief valve and a reducing
valve?
