DTM/ Paging Coordination

Impact Report
Prepared by: Yasir Altaf

DTM & Paging Coordination: An

overview
Dual Transfer
Mode (DTM) is a 3GPP standardized protocol that allows
simultaneous transfer of CS and PS data over the same radio channel. The
feature has been devised to do away with the need for separate transceivers
as required by Class A mobiles.
In DTM, the MS has a CS connection to the network and has simultaneously
allocated radio resources on one or more Packet Data Channels (PDCHs).
Allocation of radio resources for both CS and PS are controlled by network. The
feature makes it possible for PS attached mobiles to be reached for CS pages
independent of their DTM capability and without the need of Gs Interface.
An MS must be in Circuit
switch Dedicated mode for
both entering and exiting
from DTM.

Paging Coordination
Paging Coordination is an important function by DTM which provide
BSC the capability coordinating between CS & PS paging so that the
MS is always reachable no matter it is in CS call or PS data transfer
mode:

DTM Support on Network Nodes

The SGSN support for DTM consists of providing the BSS with
information regarding DTM capability for each MS. It also sends
IMSI to BSS and provide Suspend and Resume capability.
The MSC supports DTM by providing CS/PS paging coordination
procedures by transferring IMSI to BSC.

MSC Level Paging Performance: Peak Hour Stats

DTM was not activated on BSCs parented on MSC03. Significant improvement in paging performance
was observed after Paging coordination activation.

MSC Level Paging Performance: Peak Hour Stats

Repeated Page Rate increased on (MSC07) due to simultaneous modification
of MFRMS on BSC17. This is now being reverted. Overall paging success Rate
has remained consistent.

First Page success Rate increased on MSS02PE
Repeated pages decreased.

MSC Level Paging Performance: Peak Hour Stats

Increase in second page rate observed on MSS14IS. Under observation.

LAC Level Paging Performance:

Repeated Page Rate increased on LAC313 (BSC17) due to simultaneous modification of MFRMS . This is
now being reverted. Overall paging success Rate has remained consistent.

LAC Level Paging Performance:

Significant Improvement observed on LAC312 (BSC11) serving Islamabad City.

LAC Level Paging Performance:

Overall Paging success Rate improved in LAC 312 for pages originating from MSS14IS.

EOS3377(400)-No page Response counter

MSS14IS shows slightly increased instances of EOS400 (No page Response) which is consistent with
other degraded PIs on it.

SAE 1111-AXE Block MPAG

SAE 1111 seized paging individuals for all MSC decreased except MSS14IS.

BSC /Cell Level Paging Congestion:

Paging discard rate at cell level significantly reduced on Both BSCs.

DTM throughput is expectedly low due to resource sharing. BSC11 performs better as
traffic (cs +ps ) is low hence greater available resources.

Impact on Radio Network Features

CLS : DTM connections are not moved by CLS.
Impact: Total Number of CLS based HO attempts have decreased on both BSC17 & BSC11 since DTM activation.

Impact on Radio Network Features

Subcell Change by TAOL/LOL: Subcell change from OL to UL based on LOL/TAOL criteria is not allowed while in DTM.
No visible impact is seen except due to TAOL modification on BSC17.

Network impact of activating DTM

Network impact of activating DTM

Impact on DTM users

Speech quality: An Intracell CS handover occurs when DTM sessions starts or terminates. This
may have an impact on speech quality. Chances are that due to greater resource sharing HR
usage might increase resulting in possibly lowered speech quality.
Intracell HO leads to re-allocation of resources for PS session.
No visible impact on Intracell HO distribution is noticed. BSC17 does show fluctuating IHO count,
yet overall trend seems to be consistent.
