OPENING ~ DIVIDING DECIMALS

Sienna wants to save up $65 to buy a season ticket to White Water. At her
familys garage sale, she has decided to sell cupcakes for $1.25 apiece. How
many cupcakes will she have to sell in order to make $65?

1.25 65
Before working through this problem, consider the answer choices below.
Which is the only reasonable answer? How do you know?
a. 0.52 cupcakes
b. 5.2 cupcakes
c. 52 cupcakes
d. 520 cupcakes

OPENING ~ DIVIDING DECIMALS, CONTD

Using the algorithm to divide decimals:
1) First, make the divisor a whole number.
(To do this, you multiply by a power of 10.)
2) Then, multiply the dividend by the same
power of 10. (Move the decimal the same
number of places as you did in the divisor.)
3) Bring the decimal up to the quotient.
4) Divide. Add zeros after the decimal in the
dividend as needed.

Study Jams: Multiplying Decimals

MULTIPLYING DECIMALS
Algorithm:
1) Line up numbers to
the
right (you do NOT
have
have to line up the
decimals).
2) Multiply (ignore the
decimals).
3) Count the number of
places behind the
decimals in your
problem. Put the
same number of

0.3 0.4 = 0.12

Model / Example:

Using Algorithm:

0.3
x 0.4
0.12
Notice: The problem has two
decimal places, so the
product also has two
decimal places.

TRY THESE!
Determine the quotients. Show ALL work!
