Maintenance Bus (MBUS)

The MBUS is a slow (1 Mbps) and reliable out of band bus
Present on all major system components
Route Processor, Line Cards, Fabric, Power Supplies, Blowers

Used for system initialization

Communication between RPs for HA functions
Heartbeat to detect if primary goes down
Fabric is used for high speed operations to sync RPs
RP monitoring of line cards
Used to download the fabric software to LCs if necessary
Nothing to configure
Be aware of what the MBUS is in case it shows up in error msgs

Functions of the Line Cards

Run an LC specific version of IOS XR (received from RP)
Receive forwarding database from RPs
Perform per packet forwarding and feature operations
IP/MPLS lookup and rewrite
ACLs, CoS, Netflow accounting, Congestion control,
Collect statistics send to RP

Physical interface protocols SONET/SDH, GE, DPT

May host SPAs (Shared Port Adapters)

12000 Series Switch Fabric

Provides a high speed path between line cards
Packets through router are divided into fixed length cells
Input line card sends cells through fabric to output card
Output card reassembles the cells and transmits packet
Fabric is also used for other high speed paths
RP to LC forwarding database and configuration
LC to RP statistics
RP to RP HA synchronization
