ADVERBS

What is Adverbs?

Adverbs tweak the meaning of verbs, adjectives, other adverbs,


andclauses.

Adverbs also helps to refine a plain sentence to sound more


attractive.

Example :

Jordon sleeps on his new bed.


With the addition of adverbs, adjusts the meaning of sleeps so that
reader has a clearer picture :

Jordon sleeps soundly and peacefully on his new bed.

Rule 1 :
Adverbs

will generally answer the question How.

Example

:
Mr. Hwang drives his car speedily as he rush to work in the early morning.
Questioning yourself session :

Who drives the car? Mr. Hwang


What is he driving? A car
How he drives? Speedily
When he drives his car? In the early morning

Rule 2 :

Some adverbs use to modify an adjectives.

Those some adverbs (known as ADVERBS OF DEGREE) are


very, absolutely, totally, really, likely, quiet and etc. They
are usually placed before an adjective.

Examples of sentences :
i. It was very cloudy on yesterday
( It tells HOW was the weather on yesterday is it fine or bad?)
ii. The dinner that you bought for me quiet delicious
(It tells HOW was the dinner taste like? is it good or bad?)

Type of Adverbs

Adverbs of Frequency- always, sometimes, never, etc.

Adverbs of Manner- carefully, slowly, quietly, etc.

Adverbs of Time and Place- here, yesterday, then, etc.

Adverbs of Relative Time- recently, already, soon

Adverbs of Degree- very, extremely, rather

Adverbs of Quantity- a few, a lot, much, etc.

Adverbs of Attitude- fortunately, apparently, clearly, etc.

Adverbs Word Order

Adverbs are usually placed after verbs :


She speaks quickly.

When there is an object in a sentence, adverbs positioned after verb +


object :
Danielle walks slowly towards the kitchen .

Remember that, adverbs never placed between the verb


and object.
Lizzy listens to songs cheerfully
Lizzy listens cheerfully to songs

Adverbs are place in the beginning of sentence sometimes.


Quickly, the policeman hits the thiefs head by his
baton stick.

Differentiate between
adverbs and verbs

Some verbs needed up to four words to complete a sentence. Auxiliary ( as


known as helping verbs ) are used to give a clearer picture to readers.

When short adverbs such as also, never and not interrupts (located
between verbs) , it still counts as adverbs ( not verbs ).

Examples :

Delon would also buy a pair of shoes for his marathon.


verb = would buy ; adverb = also

Anna will never eat tuna after she experience a bad


stomach ache on last night.
verb = will eat ; adverb = never
Carla does not attend to class today due to her
grandmothers funeral
verb = does attend ; adverb = not

Common mistakes

You will often hear people say, Mimi is real fast


runner in our school or Vanessa is real angry
towards her brother.

Real is an adjective. It cannot modify other


adjectives ; fast , angry. So the word of real, we just
need to add ly ( really ). The correct sentence should
be Mimi is really fast runner in our school and
Vanessa is really angry towards her brother
