What is mass?
A measurement of
the amount of
matter the is an
object.

What is weight?
The measurement
of the pull of
gravity on an
object.

Differences
between mass
and weight
(Mass vs weight)

Mass

Weight

The amount of
matter in an
object.

The force that

gravity exerts on
an object.

It cannot vary
from place to
place.

It can vary from

place to place.

Mass

Weight

The mass of an
object doesn't
change when an
object's location
changes

The weight, on
the other hand
does change with
location.

The unit: grams,

kilograms,
pounds, ounces.

The unit:Newton

UNIT OF MASS
mg, g, kg, metric tonnes ounces (oz),
pounds (lb), stones, hundredweight
(cwt), tons
1 tonnes = 1000kg
1 ton = 1.016 tonnes
1 lb = 454 g = 0.454 kg
1 0z= 0.028 kg approx
50kg = 8 stones

STANDARD UNIT OF MASS

Metric
system

Imperia
l
system

gram (g),
kilogram (kg)
IMPERIAL UNIT:
ounces(oz)
pound (lb)
1 lb = 454 g = 0.454 kg
1 0z= 0.028 kg approx

The gram(g) is one thousandths of a

kg. The centicube is designed to
have a mass of 1 gram. Children can
use individual gram units to
compare masses of objects such as
small cube from base ten materials
and a paper clip , and to find the
mass of various object in gram.

TOOLS FOR
MEASURING MASS

Brick vs basketball
Which is bigger?
Which is heavier?
The masses of two objects cannot be
compared by sight. They must be held to
determine which is heavier, which is hard to
push.

Pance balance

NON STANDARD UNIT OF MASS

nonstandard units of mass include
common wooden or plastic blocks,
interlocking cubes, paper clips, and
bolts or nuts
How?
The children might be
asked to estimate how many wooden
block are as heavy as a glue stick by
use the pan balance to measure

If five block are required..

What conclusion can you make?
The mass of the glue stick is about
five blocks

mass is influenced by density, not

simply by container size.
Give pupils same size of container,
but the weight are different. ( Sugar
and sweeteners in the same sized
containers)
Let them hold the both container.
Make conclusion

Conversion
The expression of a quantity in alternative
units.

For example; 1 kg can be expressed as 1000g

A change in the units or form of an

expression.

Unit in Mass
Based on the Curriculum Specification,
there are two units of mass that are
used in primary education.
The two units are;
gram (g)
kilogram (kg)

Conversion in units of Mass

A change in the unit of mass either
from kg to g or from g to kg.
1 kg = 1000 g

YEAR 3
TOPIC: MASS
LEARNING AREA: RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN UNITS OF MASS
LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Understand the relationship
between
units of mass.
Activity :
Teacher prepares a few 1 kg and 100 g sand bags. Using the
equal arm balance, pupils balance a 1 kg sand bag with the
equivalent number of 100 g sandbags.

Pupils then weigh the sand bags on weighing scale

to see the
relationship between kilograms and grams.

1 kg = 1000 g

YEAR 4
Activity
Pupils construct tables of relationship between
units of mass.
Pupils use conversion tables to convert from
one unit of mass to another.

Convert units of mass from:

kilograms to grams,
kilograms and grams to grams,
kilograms and grams to kilograms
