FOURTH YEAR HIGH
SCHOOL STUDENTS AND
ITS RELATION TO
ACADEMIC
PERFORMANCE,
SCHOOL YEAR 2007-2008

INTRODUCTION
The journey towards the fulfillment of the dreams
and ambition starts after High School graduation.
As the schools theme for the school year goes:
Continuing the Journey Through Shepherding and
Building Ecclesiastical Communities of Hope, we in
the academe, particularly the H.S. teachers are
expected to guide and prepare the students for their
future academic battle towards the realization of
their aspiration and ambitions in life.
After graduation, students are confronted usually
with two questions: What will I be in the future?
Who will I be? These two questions serve as guide
for the youngsters to follow their career path.

INTRODUCTION
Secondary
Schools
are
providers
of
knowledge, skills, and even spiritual knowledge
to students to prepare them to become
competitive professionals in the future. One of
the programs of the government is the National
Career Assessment Examination (NCAE).
The National Career Assessment Examination
is given to all fourth year students to assess the
abilities of the students developed over the
years. The result of the examination also serves
as a guide for the students in choosing an
appropriate career path after graduation.

STATEMENT OF THE
PROBLEM
This research was conducted to find out if
the NCAE result has a relationship with the
fourth
year
students
academic
performance. Specifically it seeks to answer
the following questions:
1. What is the profile of the fourth year high
school students in terms of gender and
academic standing?
2. What is the NCAE rating of the students
along the following areas:
a. General Scholastic Aptitude
b. Technical-Vocational Aptitude 5

3. What is the academic performance of the
fourth year high school students when
grouped according to gender?
4. Is there a significant relationship in the
three areas of NCAE and the academic
performance of the fourth year high school
students?

NULL HYPHOTHESIS
This study is anchored on the hypothesis
that there is no significant relationship in the
result in three areas of NCAE and the
academic performance of the fourth year
high school students.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
The study made use of the descriptive research
design.
It also made use of documentary
analysis. The NCAE result issued by the National
Education Testing and Research Center was
analyzed. The students performance in the three
components namely; General Scholastic Aptitude,
General Scholastic Aptitude Technical-Vocational
Aptitude and Entrepreneurial Skills were analyzed.
Also, the grading sheets of fourth year advisers
containing the academic standing of the fourth
year students during the first to third grading
period for academic year 2007-2008 were
analyzed.

CONCLUSIONS
1. The performance of students in the NCAE
result in the three areas is Average.
2. Students have average performance in
their academic subjects.
3. Female students perform better in
academic s than the male students.
4. Students
academic
performance
is
significantly related to performance in the
three areas of the NCAE.

RECOMMENDATIONS
A. For Students
1. Supplementary materials like Journals
on the different subject must be provided
to the students to enhance the scholastic
skills of the students.
2. Update students awareness by
providing activities like symposium,
seminars on current trend in science
technology and society to cope with the
demands of our fast-changing society.
3. Students must be provided with
manipulative activities particularly
in the

RECOMMENDATIONS
B. For Teachers
1. Teacher must undergo further studies
particularly on their specialization to cope with the
modern trends in education to be able to address
the needs of students in terms of knowledge.
2. Teachers must attend various seminars that
may help them address the demands of our modern
students who are exposed to modern technology.
3. Multiple intelligence approach in teaching must
be practiced by the teacher to develop the student
creativity, spatial skill, manipulative skill, logicomathematics skills and come up with well rounded
and versatile students.
