NARRATIVE TEXT
Definition
Narrative text is an imaginative story to entertain people. Or narrative text is one of the English
language text that aims to tell a story that has a chronological sequence of events that are
connected.
Purpose
The purpose of narrative text is to amuse or to entertain the reader with a story.
Generic structure
orientation
it is about the opening paragraph where the characters of the story are introduced (person,
time and place)
complication
where the problems in the story developed.

resolution
where the problems in the story is solved.

Language features
using part action verb : climbed, turned, brought, etc.
using specific noun as pronoun of person, animal in the
story. Example : The king, the queen, etc.
using adjectives which are for noun phrase. Example : long
black, hair, two red apples, etc.
using time connectives & conjunctions to arrange the
events. Example : then, before, after, soon, etc.
using adverbs and adverbial phraseto show the location of
events. Example : here, in the mountain, ever after, etc.
using dialogue to elicit an emotional response from the
reader.
using past tense.

using of variety of simple, compound & complex sentences.

EXAMPLE : FINDING FARMERS MAGIC


BOOK
Once upon a time... In the afternoon, there was a poor farmer. He lives with his wife, One day, he dug
his field and found a very large box. He then store them in their homes. One sunny morning, she
dropped apples in the box. Suddenly, the box gets filled with apples. No matter how many apples were
taken out, more apples going on inside the box. One day, forming dropping gold coins into the box.
Simultaneously, Apple began to disappear and the box full of gold coins. Farmer soon became rich.
After hearing that his son became wealthy, forming a father visiting couples. His father was not very
strong. He could not go out to work again. So the farmer asked his old father to help him take the gold
coins out of the box. His father worked hard, took the gold coins out of the box. When he was told that
he was very tired and wanted to rest, the farmer yelled to him, Why are you so lazy Why can not you
work harder old man said nothing and continued to work long Suddenly? Man fell into the box, he died.
As well as gold coins began to disappear and the box is filled with the dead. The former should be
pulled out and buried. To do this, farmers have to spend all the money that had been collected earlier.
When he had spent all his money, broke the box. The farmer was ugly as before, terrible ending.

REPORT TEXT
Definition
A report text is a type of text that announce the result of an investigation or announce something.
The information given in a report text is very general information.
Purpose
Social function of report text is to present information about something generally to the reader.
Generic structure
1.

General classification tells us what the phenomenon under discussion is.

2.

description tells us what the phenomena under discussion is like in terms of : parts (and
their functions), qualities, habits or behavior.

Language features
using general nouns, such as : reptiles in comodo insland

relating uses verbs to describe the characteristics, for example : scaly reptiles are animals
(this applies to all the characteristics of reptiles)

using an action verb in explaining behavior, for example : lizards can not fly

use the present tense to express a common, for example : komodo dragons usually weight
more than / 60 kg.

using technical terms/scientific, for example : water contains oxygen and hydrogen.

EXAMPLE : CAMEL
Camel is a big and strong animal which is normally seen in desert. Generally,
there are two types of camel; Bactrian camel and Arabian camel. The first type of
camel has two humps and the second has one hump.
Camel can travel in great distances through hot and dry deserts with little food
or water. They can walk easily on the desert.
Camels are trained as means of transportation to carry people and loads on
their backs. They can also serve the people in many other ways.

ANALYTICAL EXPOSITION TEXT


Definition
Exposition is a text that elaborates the writers idea about the phenomenon surrounding. Its
social function is to persuade the reader that the idea is important matter.
Purpose
Its social function is to persuade the reader that the idea is an important matter.
Generic structure
1.

thesis : introducing the topic and indicating the writers position.

2.

argumen 1 : explaining the argument to support the writers position.

3.

argumen 2 : explaining the other arguments support the writers position more.

4.

reiteration : restating the writers position.

EXAMPLE : BUILDING STRONG


RELATIONSHIP
Since building Indonesian nation in 1945, Indonesia shared a positive and
friendly relationship with Australia.
In 1947 Australia supported Indonesias struggle for independence by placing
embargos on Dutch supplies, arms and troops. Australian dock workers went on
strike and significant numbers of Australians demonstrated in the streets in support
of Indonesian independence. The Dutch were unable to ship supplies through
Australian ports during this period.
Much of the support Australians gave to Indonesians was based on the
friendship that developed between Australian soldiers and the Indonesia people at
the end of the Second World War. There was also a strong anti-imperialist mood
among some sections of the Australian population at that time.
It is significant for Indonesia and Asian neighbors to strengthen the relationship.

HORTATORY EXPOSITION
Definition
- Hortatory exposition is a type of spoken or written text that is in tended to explain the
listeners or readers that something should or should not happen or be done.
- Hortatory exposition text can be found in scientific books, journals, magazines, newspaper
articles, academic speech or lectures, research report, etc.
- Hortatory exposition are populer among science, academic community and educated
people.
- To strengthen the explanation, the speaker or writer needs some arguments as the
fundamen fal reasons of the given idea. In other words, this kind of text can be called as
argumentation.
Purpose
To persuade the readers that something should or should not be the case or be done.

Generic structure
1. Thesis : statement or announcement of issue concern
2. Argument : reasons for concern that will lead to recommendation.
3. Recommendation : statement of what should or should not happen or be done based on the
given arguments.

EXAMPLE : MONITORING KIDS WHILE WATCHING TV


Television becomes one of the most important devices which takes place in almost houses. It
can unite all members of the family as well as separate them. However, is it important to know
what your kids are watching? The answer is, of course, absolutely Yes and that should be
done by all parents. Television can expose things you have tried to protect the children from,
especially violence, pornography, consumerism and so on.
Recently, a study demonstrated that spending too much time on watching TV during the day or
at bedtime often cause bed-time disruption, stress, and short sleep duration.
Another research found that there is a significant relationship between the amount of time
spent for watching television during adolescence and early adulthood, and the possibility of
being aggressive.
Meanwhile, many studies have identified a relationship between kids who watch TV a lot and
being inactive and overweight.
Considering some facts mentioning above, protect your children with the following tips:
1. Limit television viewing to one-two hours each day
2. Do not allow your children to have a TV set in their own bedrooms
3. Review the rating of TV shows which your children watch
4. Watch television with your children and discuss what is happening in the show

SPOOF TEXT
Definition
Spoof text is a text which tells the events of the past with an unexpected ending and funny.
Purpose
To entertain the readers with funny story.
Generic structures
1.

Orientation

introduction of the participant of the story, where it happens and when it happens. By giving
the orientation, reader will recognize the story.
2.

Events

tells about the chronological of the story. Several events are explored in chronological way
which able to arrange the story read nicely.
3.

Twist

an unpredictable plot in the end of the story which amuse the reader. Readers even didnt
predict before that it would be.

Language features
1.

focusing on individual participant like as people, animals or certain things.

2.

using past sentence.

3.

using action verb (ate, ran, was, walking,etc.)

4.

the use of adverbial phrase of time and place (in the garden, two days ago)

5.

told in chronological order.

6.

use of direct speech or indirect speech for the dialogues.

7.

the use of connective (first, then, finally)

EXAMPLE : JOE AND THE COBRA


joe woke up in the morning. he attend to find a snake which hide arround his house.
after 20 minutes searched, he found the snake. it was a cobra snake. whan he tried to catch
the
snake, it bit him in his shoe. then the cobra escape. after 3 days suffering, the cobra is die.
the shoes he used was a regular shoe, but his uncleaned 3 years shock, was contain more
poison than any snake poison in the world.

POSTER
The definition :
A poster is any piece of printed paper designed to be attached to a wall or vertical surface.
Typically posters in clude both textual and graphie elemements, although a poster may be either
wholly graphical or wholly text.
The function :
The main function of a poster is to capture a moving audience with a message. When designing a
poster, plan its design carefully. You will have a short amount of time to attract and hold your
readers attention. Think about the one aspect of the information that must convey the message
and plan your design around that.
*poster consists of Heading, Picture & Message.
*The tenses used in Simple Present Tense, and it also uses
persuasive content.

Structure of poster :
picture : it illustrate the situation of things or people. The function of picture is to make the
poster more interesting.
message : to give instruction, warning or advise to whom the poster is for.

heading : the main idea of making poster.

Types of poster are :


1. Commercial poster
2. Educational poster
3. Poster activity

EXAMPLES

A poster should :
o Have type large enouge to be viewed to 10-15 times your format width.
o Have a simple and clear layout so your reader knows where to find the information.
o Have art that is related to the message.
o

Include all important information such as date, time, location, contact name and telephone
number.

have a dominate elements such as a headlineor image that will quickly catch your readers
eye.

BANNER
A banner is a flag or other piece of cloth bearing a symbol, logo, slogan or other message.
