The Problem
Statement

Despite a seemingly remarkable

progress on academic
performances of SEA students, the
students still have hard time in
conducting experiments due to
inappropriate kind of laboratories
they are using.

Support for Problem

Statement

There is no doubt that lab-based courses play an

important role in scientific education (Nersessian,
1991).
Lab courses have a strong impact on students
learning outcomes (Magin et al., 1986).
Hands-on experience is at the heart of science
learning (Clough, 2002).
Researchers have convincingly argued that information
technology has dramatically changed the laboratory
education landscape (Scanlon et al., 2002).

Purpose Statement

To understand better the factors

that can affect the performance of
students inside the laboratories.
The purpose of the study is to help
students improve their study habit
especially inside the laboratory.

Research Question

Two central research questions guided the study:

1. What factors can affect the performance

of students inside the laboratory?
2. In what way can the students study habit
be affected by the laboratory rooms.

Research Method and

Design

A quantitative and statistical survey was made

to gather information for the research. A
questionnaire was used to collect the required
data to support the study. Also, a random
sampling was made in conducting the survey.
The conditions under the test are the following:

Currently enrolled in SLU and taking up any

Engineering or Architecture course.
Must have at least 1 laboratory subject

The test were scored according to each

question and were given their respective
breakdown analysis.

Target Population &

Sample

SEA students with laboratory subjects.

50 respondents (SEA)
Final sample was 50 students who share
common characteristics such as:
1. currently enrolled in SLU
2. taking up a bachelors degree in the School of
Engineering and Architecture
3. enrolled in at least 1 laboratory subject

Reasons for Population

Choice

Laboratories play a crucial role in the

education of future scientists and
ENGINEERS (Corter J. E., 2007)
Engineering educators believe that the
hands-on experience of the science
laboratory is a necessary supplement that
comprise a large part of the student
experience in universities (Nickerson J. V. et
al., 2007)

Results and
Discussion

18 students said
that they are
satisfied with the
laboratory rooms
used in their
subjects.
Thus 32 students
were not satisfied
with the
laboratories.

Findings

Determined that majority of the students

enrolled in the School of Engineering and
Architecture would want to improve the facilities
and laboratories they are using in their classes.
Different factors came up that were distracting
the study habits of the students while inside the
laboratory premises.
Discovered that many would want to replace all
out-dated apparatus, and replace them with
modernized pieces of equipment.

Conclusion

The University should issue modern pieces of

equipment to students inside the laboratory.
Furthermore, they must provide better laboratory
rooms for the students for them to have a better,
convenient and healthy place for learning.

The University should take into consideration all

the necessary factors that are affecting the
students inside the laboratory rooms. This may
help the students improve their understanding
about the subject matter. Also, it can help
improve the performance rating of the school
itself.

Conclusion

The University should provide enough

apparatus for each group/ individual in
performing the experiments to prevent time
congestion. This can also help students utilize
the time properly and wisely in class

Conclusion

Thank you all so

much for your
attention!!
