city
People
The roads and pathways of the barangay are
better than others other barangays according to
the people we interviewed. It is because by the
maintenance and well pavement.
Observer
The pathways in the barangay are inconsistent in
terms of utilities. Some lamp posts are not
functioning well, signage are barely readable and
road paints for like pedestrian lane were fading.
The condition of the streets and roads are still
decent.
Combination
The pathways which are the roads, walkways,
sidewalks are well paved. The only problem is
that the road paints are already fading on other
parts of the barangay. In short, inconsistent. They
connected to Ortigas Ave. which is the main road
of the barangay. It also separates the barangay
into two parts and also serves as a node in the

People
Most of the interviewees were not aware of
their barangay edges maybe because of lack
of signage of adjacent barangay.
Observer
The water formations around the barangay
serve as the barangays edges.
Combination
The edges that separates the barangay from
other barangays would be the Buli Creek and
the Cainta Creek that run around the
barangay. The water formations with concrete

neighboring barangays.

DISTRICTS
- areas characterized by common characteristics
People
The residents of Brgy. Sto Domingo point out that
the place they frequently go is the Marketplace.
Its the place for buying the goods they need and
also place for transportation because of the
terminals nearby.
Observer
The area where people mostly go would be in
Robinsons Mall and Cainta Marketplace along
Ortigas Ave. It serves as the peoples all-in-one
stop because of the variety of stores and
activities can be done there.
Combination
Most of the districts can be found near Ortigas
Ave., which is the most populous area of the
barangay. It holds the commercial and business
establishments in the city. The main
establishments and areas that most people go
are the ARDI Commercial Complex, Robinsons
Mall and Cainta Marketplace that serve as the
peoples commercial and recreational district.

People
Based on the survey 27% of the residents of the area
claim that the Cainta Junction is where they mostly go
every time they want to travel outside their barangay.
According to them this is the best place for riding public
transportations in the area.
Observers
From our own observation, the Cainta Junction became
the focal point of the area in terms travelling. It is a
junction of Ortigas Avenue Extension and Imelda Avenue
(Francisco Felix Avenue / Calumpang Road) that became
an area for travelling to different districts of Rizal or
outside the province.
Combination
This road junction is famous and well known place, a key
place in Cainta, Rizal. Its accessibility to major business
districts and population centers such as Ortigas, Makati,
Taytay, Antipolo, Angono, Binangonan makes it a notable
place in the area. It is also a stop/terminal for public
transportations like jeepneys, buses, and tricycles. Due
to the areas opportuneness in travelling, it also became
a crowded and prone to traffic congestion of vehicles.

LANDMARK
- external points of orientation, usually a easily
identifiable physical object in the urban landscape.
People
37% out of 100% of the people of Sto. Domingo stated
that the main landmark of their area is the Robinsons
Mall Cainta. According to them, every time theyre on
trip going home to their barangay, the structure
articulates that theyre already in Sto. Domingo.
Observers
For us, the barangays landmark would be the
Robinsons Mall Cainta. Aside from the structures
distinguished name, the mall is also well situated
along Ortigas Avenue Extension near Cainta Junction
which is a major node of the area. Because of the
malls superior size and design from other
establishments in the area, no wonder that this
structure could be noted as the Landmark of the area.
Combination
According to the interviews we conducted from the
residence of Sto. Domingo and on our own observation
we would say that Robinsons Mall Cainta has been
the landmark of the area. The mall served as a
meeting place of the people in the area. It also has
been main loading / unloading spot for the PUVs, in

Legibility

The barangay Sto. Domingo does have all the primary areas that a barangay needs. The
only way to become accessible is to find out what the layout of street is applied, or is it
considered to be a scattered form that makes it hard for the people to travel?

The barangay is classified as legibility, the networks of each subdivision (which is highly
seen in the barangay) is linked to each other, for an accessible way. The subdivisions have
different entrances and controlled by placing a command post to ensure the safety and security
of the residence living the compound.

Responsive Environment of the Barangay

Robustness

The barangays area which where robustness can be seen would be their marketplace. The
area has a list of uses, it has recreational and commercial use and also the peoples transportation
center.

The other one that demonstrate robustness is their barangay hall, which can be found a
police outpost, day-care center, government facility itself, fire station, multipurpose hall, and even
chapel.

Responsive Environment of the Barangay

Variety

The barangay Sto. Domingo has places that have variety of uses. The barangay maximized
its land use in many kinds of working opportunities. The barangay is also economically and
functionally situated. For example, day-care center, fire department, police station, commercial
units and chapel are found in the area where the barangay hall is located.

There are also area within the barangay where multiple uses are involve, just like the
demand of residential community to market and school facilities. This case can be found in St.
Joseph Subdivision.

Responsive Environment of the Barangay

Visual Appropriateness

The appearances of the structures are visually appropriate because of their color codes
implemented by the barangay officials. The barangay government structures and their built projects
like street waiting shed, pedestrian side walk were colored in the shades of green that makes them
easily distinguished by their people.

The signages were also well placed properly for the good of the community but by time to
time, some were not maintained due to financial address.

When it comes to the houses, they dont have a certain theme or style, the houses vary to
each other even though they are been called as subdivision that we expect as organized and
relatively the same to each other.

Concepts in Urban Design

Place Making

This is a concept that signifies the image of their working place, fun activities, or other
buildings that emphasizes the quality of the certain area such as the schools, villages, city halls, and
etc.

In barangay Sto. Domingo, there are 22 subdivisions are sited. In this 22 subdivisions, each of
one has their own marks to become unique for the others. Themes are used to remember for each
of them, and also to attract buyers of land to live in their responsive lot area.

Personalisation is present in our barangay. Examples are arches that for classifying the
subdivisions.

In private individuals, they are also implement personalisation, making marks on their houses,
from the current situation of the area, we just can tell a subdivision by their arch, because private
houses input their own style.

Concepts in Urban Design

Linkages

This is a concept that connects all elements to form as an urban design.

In barangay Sto. Domingo, there are moderate way to have a relationship for both area of
subdivision or other parts of the barangay. For example the riverside subdivision is connected at the
new public market for the convenient flow of costumers and dealers.

Linkages is also present in our parts of our barangay.

Other way of achieving the meaning of linkages, it is the bond of society and space; or refer to
the physical and visual connection of a building to the occupants.
