The Road to Revolution


There were several overarching things
happening between England the 13 colonies
which happened over the course of a hundred
years
1. Mercantilism
2. Enlightenment thought
3. Salutary Neglect
4. Self government
We shall refer to these as a MESS

MESS: Mercantilism
The British saw the colonies as a way to get
rich. Colonies were to be their way to wealth
1. Colonies must provide natural resources
cheaply to the Mother country
2. The colonies are a market and must buy
British Manufactured goods.
Colonies must follow navigation acts which
make it a crime to trade with other European
nations
. A lot of colonists resort to illegal smuggling

MESS: Enlightenment
Thought
Besides trade ideas also travel to the new world. New
thoughts on king are called enlightenment
1. John Locke: People have natural rights (Life liberty,
property)
2. Jean Jacques Rousseau: Kings have social
contract with people to protect their rights.
3. Baron de Montesquieu: power should be
balanced between three branches.
These ideas influence colonist thought and make
them question their relationship with the king

MESS: Salutary Neglect


For over a hundred years the
King was only concerned with
making money off the colonies..
As a result
1. He let them make their own
govt
2. He didnt enforce certain
rules
3. He allowed colonists greater
freedoms
This period is known as salutary
neglect

MESS: Self Government


The colonists were practicing
democracy in many ways
1. New England Town meetings
2. Virginia House of Burgesses
These practices became a selling point
and part of the colonists identity

Treatment of Natives
From the beginning of British colonization
Native American were losing land.
1. British colonists are farmers who want
land
2. French colonists were traders who only
wanted to use land
Natives fought back numerous times
3. King Phillips war (Puritans kill pequot
tribe)
4. Natives begin to align themselves with
the French

French and Indian War


France and Britain
began to compete
over the backcountry
1. Native American
tribes took sides.
2. American Colonists
fought with the
British
3. George Washington
fought in the British
army.
