INTRODUCTION
Quenched and tempered steels are used in
military vehicle construction
Fabrication is performed by fusion welding
Fatigue crack formation
Microstructure formation in welds

LITERATURE RIVIEW

JOINT FABRICATION
Joints are fabricated by SMAW and FCAW process
V butt joint is provided.
Different parameters are used.
Interpass Temperature
Arc voltage

FATIGUE CRACK GROWTH TESTING

CCT specimen used.
Specimen placed in fatigue testing machine.
Cracks are formed in the specimen.

Crank length vs Number of cycles [1]

Base metal exhibit high fatigue resistance.

SF joint show high fatigue crack resistance.

TRANSVERSE TENSILE TEST

Universal tensile machine used
Tensile specimen is created with help of lathe.
To find Youngs modulus, Yield strength and Ultimate
strength.

SF exhibit superior tensile properties.

LHF exhibit superior tensile property.
Also SMAW offers superior tensile property.

Analyzed by two different conditions.

Predominant in weld metal region.
Different thermal expansion.

FRACTOGRAPHY
Fractured surfaces are analysed.
Cracks are propagated.
Unstable crack growth in final failure region.
Cracks initiation sites are lower in LHFcompared
to ASS.

MICROSTRUCTURE
Acicular ferrite microstructure.
Tough and strong microstructure.
Importance of Nickel
SA joint has superior tensile property and
hardness than SF Joint.
SF joints has superior crack resistance.

MECHANICAL PROPERTIES
Properties are Tensile and Yield strength.
LHF has superior tensile property.
Acicular ferrite is present.
SMAW exhibit superior fatigue crack growth
resistense.

CONCLUSION
SMAW has superior crack resistance compared to
FCAW.
Superior Mechanical properties and
Microstructure provide high fatigue resistance.
LHF also used for welding Quenched and
Tempered steels.
