MEET THE 4TH GRADE MS. MITCHELL

I have 10 years of teaching experience (this is my


fourth year here at A. Philip Randolph)
Previously taught 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade, and served as
an Early Intervention teacher for several years.
Received my M.Ed. from Lesley University in Curriculum
and Instruction with a specialization in Literacy, and my
B.S. from Paine College in Early Childhood Education. I
also hold an endorsement in Reading.
During my career in education I have served in many
capacities such as Grade Level Chair, EIP/Lead Teacher,
a member of the Instructional Leadership Team and
School Governance Council.

I have been in public


school education for 22
years. I moved to Atlanta,
GA in 1990 from Oakland,
California to attend
Spelman College. I chose
to be a teacher because I
love children and I
especially enjoy watching
them grow socially and
academically. I am thrilled
to be an Extraordinary
Dolphin and look forward
to this year's success!

I'm from Alabama, I


attended Alabama State
University, where I played
football and earned my
bachelors degree. I've been
in education for 8 years
and enjoy teaching our
young minds. The children
of today will be our future.

I graduated from Grand Valley


State University and the
University of New Mexico.
I spent more than ten years
working in social service, both
as a social worker and in
administration.
This is my first year teaching
elementary school. I
previously taught college
Spanish.

I graduated from Spelman


College and UCLA.
I grew up in Marietta, and
graduated from Cobb County
schools.
This is my 4th year teaching - I
have previously taught third
grade.

MEET THE 4TH GRADE MR. WILLIAMS

I am Darius Williams, a 4th grade


teacher in my second year here at
Randolph Elementary.
I am a proud 2015 graduate of
Morehouse College.
While there, I completed the Early
Childhood Education program at
Spelman College.
I am so excited to be back at
Randolph Elementary School!
Ask me about volunteering with
Dapper Dolphins (our boys
enrichment group) and the new
Project-Based Learning Lab that is
coming to Randolph Elementary!

GRADE REPORTS & HOME ACCESS

Progress reports
are sent home
every three
weeks. However,
parents can
access grades at
any time through
the Home Access
Center.

READING/LANGUAGE
ARTS

Reading for Literature (RL)- The reader is able to identify with a character and its conflict or
problem in a story. The reader can see life through the eyes of the character and begin to share
the authors insight.

Reading for Information (RI)- Identifying relevant information within a text to provide a
reason for reading and recreate the circumstances in which readers operate in real world
situations.

Reading Foundational Skills (RF)- Knowledge of phonics (correlating sounds with letters or
groups of letters) and Word Recognition.

Speaking and Listening (SL)- Engaging and communicating effectively in collaborative


discussions.

Language (L)- Becoming self-directed learners, effectively seeking out and using resources
including teachers, peers, print, and digital reference materials.

Writing: Students will learn and be expected to produce writing in multiple genres:
informative/explanatory, opinion/argumentative, and narrative

In the STEM Lab, students will have the opportunity to


participate in hands-on science and engineering projects.
The experiments will be aligned with the Fulton County
Science curriculum. The engineering challenges will
provide students a way to be creative and think outside the
box while participating in cooperative groups to solve
real-life engineering problems.

ways you can support the STEM Lab.

EARLY INTERVENTION PROGRAM


(EIP)

Who? EIP Teachers provide assistance for students in grades K-5.


What? EIP services work in two ways:
PreviewStudents will work ahead of their homeroom class on
skills that are coming up, so they can be ready when the skills are
taught in their homeroom.
RemediationStudents will participate in ongoing spiral review of
foundational skills they may need support and practice with to
help them be successful in their grade level assignments.
When & Where? Students are pulled out for 50 minutes daily
(per subject) in the EIP classroom.
Why? The purpose is to help students reach grade level
performance in Reading and/or Mathematics.
How? Small group instruction, integration of technology, handson activities, unique projects

The Georgia Aquarium (Science Ecosystem unit in


October) Estimated price: ~ $22/student
College visit to the Atlanta University Center (College
Readiness mission in February) Estimated price:

Fernbank (Science Survival and Extinction of Organisms
