Internet and internet

application introduction

What is INTERNET?
It is a world-wide global system of
interconnected computer networks and
devices

What is INTERNET ?

It

connects

millions

of

computers

together, globally forming a network in

which any computer can communicate
with any other computer as long as they
are both connected to the Internet.

What is INTERNET ?
The Internet acts as a pipeline to transport
electronic messages from one network to another
network. At the heart of most networks, there is a
SERVER,
SERVER is a fast computer with large amounts
of memory and storage space. The server controls
the communication of information between the
devices

attached

to

network,

computers, printers, or other servers.

Internet history
The precursor to the Internet was
jumpstarted in the early days of computing
history, in 1969 with the U.S. Defense
Department's Advanced Research Projects
Agency Network (ARPANET).
ARPANETwas a secret military project
developed by United States Department of
Defense

Internet history
Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA)
hosted a program with several research
institutions called Resource Sharing Computer
Networks.
ARPA's goal was
1. link different computers together,
2. increase overall computer power
3. decentralize information storage.
The U.S. government wanted to find a way to
access and distribute information in the case of a
catastrophic event, such as a nuclear attack. If a
bomb hit an important computer line, information
transfers would stop immediately. But if there
were a way to network computers, other parts of

Internet history
the purpose of ARPANET was to provide communication
among
the various bodies of government and military
facilities
In 1972, theARPANETspread over the globe with 23
nodes located at different countries and thus became known
asInternet
By the time, with invention of new technologies such as
TCP/IP protocols, DNS, WWW, browsers, scripting languages
etc.,Internet provided a medium to publish and access
information over the web.

What is The Web (World Wide

Web)?
The WORLD WIDE WEB, or simply Web, is a way of accessing
information

over

the

medium

of

the

Internet.

It

is

an

information-sharing model that is built on top of the Internet.

The Web uses the HTTP protocol,
HTTP protocol - is one of the languages spoken over the
Internet, to transmit data.
Web services, which use HTTP to allow applications to
communicate in order to exchange business logic, and to share
information.
The Web are utilized by using web browsers, such as Internet
Explorer or Firefox, to access Web documents which also called

History of the World Wide Web

Ideas for the World Wide Web date back to as early
as 1946 when Murray Leinster wrote a concept called
LOGICS which described how computers would be in every
home and with each one having access to a central device
where they could retrieve information
40 years later in 1980 when an English man by the name
of Tim Berners Lee was working on a project known as
'Enquire'. Enquire was a simple database of people and
software who were working at the same place with him. It was
during this project that he experimented with hypertext
HYPERTEXT - is a text which contains links or connections to
other
texts
Tim Berners Lee Enquire system used hyperlinks on each
page of the database, each page referencing other relevant
pages within the system.

History of the World Wide Web

December 1990 Tim had joined forces

with another physicist Robert Cailliau who
rewrote Tim's original proposal. It was their
vision to combine hypertext with the internet
to create web pages,

June 8th 1991, the World Wide Web

project was introduced to the world by Tim
Berners Lee

DEVELOPMENT OF INTERNET
BROWSERS
Shortly afterwards other browsers were
released, each bringing differences and
improvements
Line Mode Browser
released on feb 1992.
This was also brought
to us by Tim Berners
Lee. It was the first
browser to support
multiple platforms.

DEVELOPMENT OF INTERNET
BROWSERS

Viola WWW Browser

released - march 1992. This
is widely suggested to be the
world's first popular browser.
It brought with it a stylesheet
and scripting language, long
before JavaScript and CSS.

Mosaic Browser
released - Jan 5th
1993. Mosaic was
really highly rated
when it first came out.
It was developed at
University of Illinois

Microsoft decided to get in on the act when its Windows
operating system '95 was released

The two most widely used browsers in this

generation
1. Google Chrome
2. Mozilla Firefox

The Advantages of internet

Today, Internet covers almost every aspect of life, one can
think of.
Here, we will discuss some of the advantages of Internet:

The Advantages of internet

1. SOCIAL NETWORKING is the practice of expanding the
number of one's business and/or social contacts by making
connections through individuals.
a) Facebook, twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram
2. ENTERTAINMENT You tube, online games, music sites,
movie streaming
sites
3. EDUCATION and TECHNOLOGY - research and
development, schools and
universities
4. ONLINE SERVICES businesses, ads, google search, yahoo,
news and
information sites, download and upload
sites, E-mail web
sites

Disadvantages of the internet

Disadvantages of the
internet
1. THREAT TO PERSONAL INFORMATION hacking
personal accounts, passwords, documents
2. SPAMMING sending unsolicited or junk mails,
annoying advertisements
3. VIRUS ATTACKS destroying and corrupting data
and files , malicious activities in your PC
4. CYBERCRIME criminal activities, pornography,
fake websites and accounts, software copyright
infringement

Internet Security

Introduction
Internet security relies on specific resources and
standards for protecting data that gets sent through
the internet. This includes various kinds of encryption
such as other aspects of a secure web setup includes
firewalls, which block unwanted traffic, anti-malware,
anti-spyware & anti-virus programs that work from
specific networks or devices to monitor internet traffic
for dangerous attachments.
Insufficient internet security can threaten to collapse
an e-commerce business or any other operation
where data gets routed over the web.

Concept of Internet
Security :
Three basics security concepts important to
information on the internet are:
1. INTEGRITY
2. CONFIDENTIALITY
3. AVAILABILITY

Concept of Internet
Security :
Three basics security concepts important to information on the
internet are:

1. INTEGRITY
The concept of integrity is divided in 2 forms:
A.) Data integrity:
this property, that data has not been altered in an
unauthorized manner while in storage, during processing or
while in transit. another aspect of data integrity is the
assurances that data can only be accessed and altered by
those authorized to do so. often such integrity is insured by
use of a number referred to as message integrity code or
message authentication code

1. INTEGRITY
The concept of integrity is divided in 2 forms:
B.) System integrity:
This quality states that a system has when performing the
intended function in an unimpaired manner, is free from
unauthorized manipulation. Integrity is commonly an
organizations most important security objective, after
availability. Integrity is particularly important for critical safety
and financial data used for activities such as electronic funds
transfers ,air traffic control ,and financial accounting.

Concept of Internet
Security :
Three basics security concepts important to information on the internet
are:

2. CONFIDENTIALITY:
Confidentiality is the requirement that private or confidential
information should not be disclosed to unauthorized individuals.
Confidentiality protection is applies to data in storage, during
processing ,and while in transit. For many organizations ,
confidentiality is frequently behind availability and integrity in
terms
of importance. For some types of information,
confidentiality is a very
important attribute. Examples includes
research data ,medical and
insurance records ,new product specifications ,and corporate
investments strategies

Types of internet Security

The Security of the web is divided into two
(a) Computer Security,
(b) Network Security.
In generic terms, COMPUTER SECURITY is the
process of securing a single, standalone computer,
while NETWORK SECURITY is the process of
securing an entire network of computers.
.

Types of internet Security

A) COMPUTER SECURITY:
technology and managerial procedures applied to
computer systems to ensure the availability integrity ,
and confidentiality of data managed by the computer.
B) NETWORK SECURITY:
Protection of network and their services from
unauthorized modification destruction, or disclosure and
provision of assurance that the network performs its
critical functions correctly and there are no harmful side
effects. The major points of weakness in computer
system are hardware, software, and data however ,other
components f the computer system may be targeted.

Ethical Issues In Internet

Security
Ethics in everyday life serves as moral guide
posts, comprising a code that defines
behavior
as right or wrong . The web offers a vast store
of information coupled with extensive
communications capabilities , and unethical
users can harness this capabilities for
personal
and financial gains at others expense. Web
ethics provide a guide to appropriate online
behavior , adapting familiar ethical standards
to provide a moral framework for navigating
the
internets virtual environment.

Ethical Issues In Internet

Security
1) INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY:

Using material properly without properly citing its

source constitutes plagiarism when applied to
written works , and the same standard applies to
documents and websites on the internet. The
creator of the original work is still due
acknowledgement of her efforts . File-sharing
sites and applications may also provide a means for
Web surfer to infringe on other intellectual
properties by offering copy righted works for
downloading. While illegally downloading
copyrighted material is no different from theft

Ethical Issues In Internet

Security
2)

NETIQUETTE:

Netiquette concerns basic rules and ethics of online

social interaction when a person is interacting with
other in chat rooms or other social environment ,
He/she should conduct thereselves as if they where
face to face with the other sharing venue . even when
a person is engaged in a heated disagreement , it is
mandate to remain respectful and refrain from the use
of inflammatory invective, or flaming words .
Ex: to compose messages consisting entirely of capital
letters as it carries the act that you are shouting

Ethical Issues In Internet

Security
3)

Respecting privacy

A persons computer should be free and safe place

to store data and information, but unethical
individual employ a variety of mean to breach
network security and access personal data. Hacking
not only represent a gross breach of privacy, it can
also personally and financially damaging to the
people whose information is accessed. Online
businesses routinely collect personal and financial
information from there customer and many respect
there customers need for confidentiality and
security

Ethical Issues In Internet

Security
4.) CULTIVATING WEB ETHICS :

Parents and teachers should become

knowledgeable enough about the internet
capabilities and venues for social networking to be
able t teach children ethical standard for web use.
Children should understand that in addition to
being unethical action such as piracy and
harassment can carry substantial civil and criminal
penalties . organizations such as businesses and
schools should develop a clearly articulated
acceptable use policy governing permissible
internet use among within the institution

WHAT IS A LOCAL AREA NETWORK ( LAN ) ?

ALocal
AreaNetwork(LAN)
is
acomputernetworkthat spans a relatively small
area.
Most often, a LAN is confined to a single room,
building or group of buildings, however, one LAN
can be connected to other LANs over any distance
via telephone lines and radio waves. Asystemof
LANs connected in this way is called awide-area
network (WAN).

Parts of a LOCAL AREA NETWORK

( LAN )

1. INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDER ( ISP) - is a company that

provides you with access to the Internet, usually for a fee.
The most common ways to connect to anISPare by using a
phone line (dial-up) or broadband connection (Cable, DSL or
Wireless broadband ).
2. ROUTER - is a device that forwards data packets along
networks. Arouteris connected to at least two networks,
commonly two LANs or WANs or a LAN and its ISP's
network.Routersare located at gateways, the places where
two or more networks connect. The IP address of a router is
usually the default gateway in configuring the network
connection in Windows
3. HUB - is common connection point fordevicesin anetwork.
Hubs are commonly used to connectsegmentsof a LAN.
Ahubcontains multipleports. When apacketarrives at one
port, it is copied to the other ports so that all segments of
the LAN can see all packets.

4. WIRELESS ROUTER - is a device that performs the functions of

arouterand also includes the functions of awireless access
point. It is used to provide access to theInternetor a
privatecomputer network. It can function in a wired LAN
(local area network), in a wireless-only LAN (WLAN), or in a
mixed
wired/wireless
network,
depending
on
the
manufacturer and model.
