AL - FARABI

(870 950 AD)

LIFE HISTORY
Abu Nasr Mohammad Ibn al-Farakh alFarabi was born in Wasij, a small
village near Farab in Turkistan in the
year 870 AD.
He completed his early education in
Farab and Bukhara, then furthered his
studies in Baghdad until 942 AD.

In the beginning, he was involved in


the judiciary as a judge (Qadi), but
later became a teacher.
He died in 950 AD in Damascus at the
age of 80.

CONTRIBUTIONS
Major contributions was in philosophy,
logic and sociology. As a philosopher,
he was a Neoplatonist who combined
the ideas of Plato and Aristotle with
theology.
Thus, he became known as the second
Great Teacher( al-Mouallim al-Thani)

His most important contribution was


dividing the study of logic into two
categories;
a. Idea (Takhayyul)
b. Evidence (Thubut)
He has produced 117 books including
43 on logic, 11 on metaphysics, 7 on
ethics, 7 on political science, and 17
on music and medicine.
